I’ve hatched over 1,500 chicks so far this year and I’m on track to hatch over 3,000 for the second year in a row. Most are from projects that are still super secret. Most people hatch more of what already exists. I tinker with what doesn’t—yet.

The real work is slow: breaking down existing breeds, experimenting with new crosses, tracking how specific traits are inherited, and trying to turn one-in-a-dozen flukes into repeatable, productive birds I can s*x at hatch and share with you.

I want to say thank you to everyone who’s bought chicks or hatching eggs this year. You’re not just supporting a small farm—you’re part of the experiment. Every order helps move the project forward.

These are called white-banded eggs. It happens when a hen is stressed and holds her egg in instead of laying it when she needs to.

Most often they’re one-off blips seen after you move hens, after a predator attack, etc. BUT I have had hens who lay eggs like this more often than not and they should not be bred.

The good kind of heavy bloom is an even coating over the entire egg and will not feel rough to the touch.
