Donkeys are protective of themselves, as they have very high self-preservation. This has led to the erroneous myth of the “Livestock Guardian Donkey”. Putting a prey animal in a position to “protect” other livestock often leads to tragedy. Many donkeys will harm the animals they are supposed to protect, or be harmed themselves by predators that they are in no position to fight. The frustration of not having another donkey companion that “speaks donkey” can lead to mutilating or killing other, smaller livestock species. Furthermore, a donkey’s diet is exceedingly different from a sheep, cow, horse, or goat. Donkeys will usually become obese and founder on a diet that is too rich. Donkeys oftentimes are harmed by loose dogs and other predators. They may also simply protect themselves and not the livestock. Putting a donkey in this position of illogical responsibility and in a situation where their care, keeping, and emotional wellbeing is compromised by the mismanagement of nutrition and companionship is a form of neglect.

She was favorite amongst the animals at the farm. She toted countless children around in circles for pony rides and never complained. She was always the best mannered and most tolerant pony. We said good bye to her today. We will miss her and things will definitely be different without her around. Run free Cookie!
