It is our mission to provide the highest quality medical and surgical care to our patients and to serve our clients in a courteous, professional and kind manner. n the 1930s. Dr. Barry Powell purchased the practice in 1978, and with the addition of doctors and support staff we outgrew the previous building (now King Road Boarding & Grooming). Construction on our 5000-sq-ft facility broke ground in the fall of 1997 and was completed in 1998. In March 2005, Dr. Kristen Shaw formed a partnership with Dr. Powell, and Dr. Shaw became the full owner of the clinic in Janary 2007.

In addition to these helpful tips, it’s important to remember to keep your pets current on flea, tick, and heart worm prevention.

If your pet ingests any unknown or possibly toxic substances, contact the pet poison control helpline for quickest assistance. They will be able to work with our team on the necessary treatment plan for the situation.

Yesterday was National Dachshund Day 🎉 Did you do anything to celebrate your short legged companion?

Did you know that Dachshunds are especially prone to dental problems? Their smaller mouths combined with relatively large teeth often lead to needing a dental cleaning (or even extractions!) by age 3-5 years old! Your veterinarian will help you monitor your pets ongoing oral health during their annual exams at our office.

Join us in welcoming our newest Doctor!

Dr. Cheyenne Oligario has a long-standing passion for working with animals, which led her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. She enjoys building relationships with clients and caring for pets as valued members of the family, and is committed to providing thoughtful, compassionate care while helping clients feel informed and confident in their pet’s treatment. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to veterinary school, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, and spent two years working as a veterinary assistant, where she developed a strong foundation in patient care and client communication. Outside of the clinic, she enjoys reading, painting, and exploring creative outlets, including a love of fantasy and Renaissance fairs.

She will start seeing patients in early July. We look forward to integrating her into our team!

Last week we celebrated Dr. Ricker’s tremendous commitment to her patients and clients over her 40 years of service to the veterinary community here at Southgate Animal Clinic, and now her next step into retirement!

Since joining the clinic on January 1, 1986, Dr. Ricker has provided compassionate care and built lasting relationships with generations of families and pets. Her dedication to veterinary medicine and to the community has made a lasting impact on everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing her.

Throughout her career, Dr. Ricker also devoted time to Guide Dogs for the Blind, helping raise puppies that later became working guide dogs. Her kindness, patience, and welcoming smile have made her not only an exceptional veterinarian, but also a treasured friend and colleague.

While we will greatly miss seeing Dr. Ricker at the clinic, we are excited for her as she begins this next chapter filled with travel, family time, and well-earned relaxation.
