My Last Client of the Day — and a Gentle Reminder:
I finished work a bit later than usual tonight, but not because I was behind-
Because something in my heart told me to say yes when I normally would’ve said no.
Late last night, I got a message from a woman needing help grooming her two Yorkies—Miss Annabelle and Isabella. She let me know she was getting ready to move into assisted living, and her pups were overdue for some care.
She couldn’t drive.
I didn’t have any house-call availability today.
My day was already full.
Logically, I would have said I was booked-because I try to always focus on my self care.
But something tugged at me. That little voice in the back of my mind—the one that says “this is one of those moments.” I offered to help her get her dogs to my shop, fit her in after hours, and take care of them.
What I didn’t know, was that this woman is battling stage 4 cancer, her husband is battling Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
She never once asked for pity, she didn’t try to guilt me, she was just trying to get her dogs groomed one last time before her life changes.
And I’m so incredibly grateful I listened to that voice and made time for her.
I didn’t charge her a thing-because I believe deeply in meeting people with kindness.
We live in a world that often feels like it’s running low on compassion. There’s so much division, cruelty, and thoughtless rudeness that it sometimes feels easier to just shut down. But I refuse to become numb to that. I refuse to stop caring.
Because I know this to be true:
When you put kindness into the world—genuine, quiet, compassionate kindness—it always finds its way back. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but always when it’s needed most.
So if you’ve been looking for a sign, this is it.
Be kind. Be a light. Do the thing that feels inconvenient but right. Someone out there needs it more than you know.
And tonight, I needed that reminder just as much as she did.
