“I adopted Rascal when she was ten years old. She had been abused in her first ten years and still knew exactly what she was looking for. It was love at first sight — she looked at me, I looked at her, and then she crawled into my lap and purred. Then we found out we had the same birthday. It was meant to be. I got six and a half years to treat her like the queen she deserved to be. Rest in peace, my beautiful Rascal.”

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, a day to remember the animals who changed our lives simply by being part of them.

Rascal’s story is one of many. We asked HSSV staff and volunteers to tell us about the pets they’ve loved and lost — animals in our care who they'll never forget, the companions who made them laugh, offered comfort, gave unconditional love, and shaped their days.

Grief can be difficult to put into words. But sometimes, telling their stories gives all that love somewhere meaningful to go. ❤️

Tomorrow, hundreds of adoptable pets will be waiting for their next chapter — all in one place!

We’re excited to join more than 30 Bay Area shelters and rescue organizations at Bark (& Meow) Around the Block, hosted by Berkeley Humane. 🐾❤️

From playful puppies and curious kittens to sweet adult dogs and cats, there will be so many amazing animals to meet, including HSSV adoptables looking for their people.

And adoption isn’t the only way to get involved! Whether you’re ready to welcome a new companion, thinking about fostering, or simply want to spend a fun day celebrating animals, there’s something for everyone.

Ollie (formerly Lola) may have started out as the new kitten in the family, but she quickly became an important part of it.

Her biggest role? Little sister to Miso Soup.

"It took a little while to get along with her brother, but she loves him so much, and they sleep, eat, and play together 24/7." 🐱🐱

She’s also proving to be quite the social butterfly, getting along with everyone she meets — even dogs! And when she had a playdate with a gray cat named Caboos, she loved every minute of it.

Thanks to the generous support of Hill’s Pet Nutrition, adoption fees are waived for ALL adult dogs and cats at HSSV from August 24–31! 🐾

🐶 Alvin is an affectionate 8-year-old pup who loves being by his person’s side. He’s a social butterfly who enjoys meeting new people and dogs and would happily follow you around the house for some extra cuddles.

🐱Mama is a gentle tuxedo girl who loves cozy hiding spots, chin scratches, and Churu treats. Once she feels comfortable, her sweet, chirpy personality shines.

This National Dog Day, we're celebrating all the incredible pups, canines, and companions in our community and in our care.

Adoptables like Marigold, who know that life is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, bringing sunlight with them wherever they go.

Marigold can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but give her time to open up, and she blossoms, especially with canine friends.

Her simple pleasures include head scratches, a cozy place to lounge, and plenty of playtime with other pups.

A bag of pet food may seem like a small gift, but to a family facing hard times, it can mean security.

HSSV's Pet Pantry helps ensure that temporary financial challenges don't become an obstacle for pets and the people who love them.

Right now, we're looking for donations of:
🐶 New, unopened dog food
🐱 New, unopened cat food
🚫 Please, no prescription diets

There are two easy ways to give:
📍 Drop off donations in the blue bins outside our lobby at 901 Ames Ave.
