We have an opportunity to get 3 of our sanctuary owner surrenders a 20 x 12 shelter at a much lower cost than they are typically priced. This is a huge opportunity but we only have a limited number of days to raise $1700. We’ve done it before- so I’m hoping we can do it again.

We have until Nov. 5th to raise $1700

That’s 6 more days to raise the remaining $827
That’s $137 raised each day.

Please help these deserving horses if you can. The winter is going to be brutal and we cannot stress enough that we need this help and we are running out of time.

Imagine this post was yesterday 🫶🏼 Oct. 26th.

National day of the mule, in the year of the fire horse.

A beautiful hybrid who helped build and shape American agriculture, transportation, and westward expansion.

What a better creature to commemorate this than Myrtle. My mule 💜

She is as fierce as a fire horse, with the brilliance of a mule, and the grit that has withstood such pain most would shatter experiencing it.

The scars on her soul aren’t much different than the scar in her eye. Cloudy, hazy, heavy and a reminder of her past..

Here’s to the mules of America and the ones who have been blessed enough to be saved by rescues for a second chance. 🍻

I was asked the other day (as I am asked often) .. “Wow they are so old, and you can’t do anything with them. Why would you want your sanctuary horses ?”
I am told repeatedly that “I am crazy” for spending money and time on such old horses, arthritic horses, horses you can’t ride, “horses with no use.”

It’s a conversation I’ve become quite familiar with. One that no longer makes my blood boil because I’ve had it so many times. It still makes me sad, especially because humans are so callous. However, this is the world we live in. If it isn’t “useful” it isn’t worth it to many. .

These “not useful” horses can heal parts in myself, and others that no amount of medication or therapy could touch. They have a way to make you self reflect in any quiet moment, and want to improve yourself. They are gentle and kind teachers to those who aren’t sure of these large animals. They are the most deserving beings.

They are old, worn down, arthritic, and not rideable because their old owners used their bodies up. Then tossed them out like an old piece of trash.

They didn’t do the honorable thing and cherish them in their harder days. As the horses surely did for those humans many times.

I ache for the day people show up for their equine as their equine showed up for them.

Maybe not in this lifetime, but hopefully in the next.

For now, I will cherish the ones we are able to help and continue this conversation of why they ARE worth it with those who ask.

DeeDee Donk is here to ask our followers for donations. . We have a week of funds left to survive on... Without donations we simply cannot do the work we do - we simply cannot stay open if our weeks end with such large deficits 💔

Donations are critically low to non existent right now. I know it seems like we are always asking for help, because we are. I hope one day we will have enough recurring donors, local donors, local grants, and other resources to not have to beg to stay afloat. We are working tirelessly, but sometimes we need more help.
