A huge shoutout to all farm owners and workers! The ones who’ve stuck it out through thick and thin. The ones who didn't sell out to developers! There are a limited amount of us left. This year we are making up for all the mild winters we’ve had… all in just a few months!
Winter is not warm cozy barn vibes and hot chocolate like you see online!
Winter is survival mode! 🆘
Yes! We post beautiful winter photos around the farm…
Behind the scenes:
❄️ Water freezes. Constantly. Buckets, troughs & hoses. You will be breaking ice multiple times a day and running heaters in the warm rooms that spike your electric bill.
❄️ You are hauling water. In the dark. In the cold. Sometimes multiple times a day. Snow, ice, all of it.
❄️ Hay usage skyrockets. Horses eat more to stay warm. Bedding costs double because the horses are inside more than out. That means higher feed costs and more frequent hay & bedding deliveries, which can be delayed by weather.
❄️ Turnout is limited due to extreme cold temps and frozen conditions. We are feeding hay full time & changing bedding daily.
❄️ Blanketing is not optional for many horses. That means on, off, change weights, fix straps, deal with ripped blankets, soaked blankets, and frozen buckles.
❄️ Snow removal. Keeping the farm plowed at all times during storms. Diesel, diesel and more diesel!
❄️ Ice is dangerous. For you and your horses. One bad slip can mean a hospital visit or months of rehab for a horse. Salt, salt and more salt!
❄️ Vet and farrier access can be limited. Weather delays happen. Emergencies do not care about forecasts.
❄️ You still have to go out there. Every day. Sick, tired, holidays, snowstorms, freezing rain. There are no days off. There is no calling out. Horses need us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year!
❄️ Your equipment suffers. Frozen gates, frozen hoses, dead batteries, tractors that will not start, broken fences and posts almost impossible to fix in these brutal conditions.
❄️ Your time commitment doubles. What takes only 15 minutes in summer can take over an hour in winter.
❄️ Your costs increase while your enjoyment often decreases. Less riding, more maintenance, more stress.
Thank your farm workers today, thank them every day, because until you walk in their shoes, you have no idea what it takes to survive winter with horses in the Northeast!
Horses are magnificent and amazing! They can also be exhausting, expensive, and unforgiving in winter months. Luckily we love your horses as much as you do and make sure they are well cared for everyday! 🤍
