JJ Hampton’s first session with the leather mouthpiece bit. She’s wanting her horse to be in the bit , not behind it. This way he is pulling her out of the corner and leaving flat. If you don’t understand that concept don’t feel stupid. I’m old. The bottom line is if they’re scared of the bit, you’re not gonna get maximum performance. There’s lots of horses out there that you can put in a fairly severe bit and get maximum performance. There’s also lots of them out there that are scared of a bit like that so you don’t get maximum performance.

This gives a horse a comfortable confidence to stay in the bridal. If you nod and pull, which none of us like to do, but we often seem to do,they have a lot more of a tendency to stay flat and leave flat and not leave you 2 foot off the barrier. They’re more forgiving for your left hand all the way around. In the corner and in the field, regardless of the event. If you can ask a horse to do something instead of tell them, they’ll treat you a lot better and that just might transfer into longevity for them and more money in your pocket. You might be able to leave them in it or once they get that confidence, move them up to a little more bit.
You might even end up with a better left hand in the process because you’ll be more aware of how important it is. I didn’t figure all this out on my own. A horse told me. Thx y’all!
