An update on our Pepper girl. Unfortunately, it appears she will not be recovering from going blind. Through a lot of testing at the ER and neurologist, she tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. We treated with antibiotics and while she perked back up and started feeling better, her sight did not return. More testing with the ophthalmologist and she has been diagnosed with Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS). It is unknown if it was triggered by the RMSF or if it would have happened anyway, but it has no treatment or cure.

So we’ve been adjusting to a new way of life in our household, an adjustment that has been more difficult than we hoped or expected, especially having a newborn and dealing with the recent loss of a family member at the same time. But we are sure we will find a way to continue our adventures in time and we will keep Pepper included to the best of our ability. They might just have to look a little different than before.

A sick dog while traveling is always a complicated matter…Pepper started to display signs of blindness and incoordination during a recent trip and we ended up in the ER, then being referred to a neurologist for an MRI and Spinal tap. Testing came back revealing that she has contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick born infection. It’s not overly common my in area and she is current on tick meds so we were surprised but glad to have a cause for her alarming symptoms. Thankfully it is treatable with long term antibiotics and the vet is hopeful her vision will return, at least partially, with treatment. It’s going to be a long road to recovery but we are thankful we caught it in time and that she is still alive.
