🎉✨ One year ago today, on September 1, we got the keys to our new building! 🏢💚 Our team popped the champagne 🍾 and then got straight to work turning the space into the perfect home for wildlife rehabilitation and education.

Walls came down, new ones went up. 🛠️ Floors were stripped and sealed, walls and trim painted, appliances delivered and installed. Less than two months later, we moved in and officially became Lancaster County’s very first commercial/non-residential wildlife rehabilitation and education facility! 🐿️🦝🐇

What started as a dream back in Spring 2010 suddenly sprang to life. 🌱

To our friends, families, and community—THANK YOU 🙏 for making this possible. Your support has carried us every step of the way. 💚

We can’t wait to welcome you into our space in just a few weeks as we celebrate a very special milestone—Snags the Squirrel’s 10th birthday! 🎂🐿️

Here’s to the next chapter in helping wildlife, together. 🌎💚

These three little boys each lost their entire family 💔 and came to us alone—some even injured. After their quarantine period, we carefully paired them together to form a brand-new family. 💕 Patients 25-538, 25-546, and 25-555 are now the bestest of friends and will return to the wild side by side. 🌳🐿️

Being raised with other squirrels helps them “learn how to squirrel” quicker 🐾—from climbing and wrestling to foraging—and it gives them the comfort and companionship that only another squirrel can provide. 🫂✨

Because of your support, these boys will have a second chance at the wild life they were born to live. 🌿💚

✨🐾 Belvedere the Virginia Opossum was in FULL drama mode today! 🦔💤 As we approached his enclosure to clean and freshen his cozy blankies, up went the paw ✋ as if to say, “No thank you, not now… I’m resting.”

We’re beginning to think this boy needs his very own Do Not Disturb sign. 😂💤

Patients 25-530, 531, 532, & 533 are getting their zoomies on! 🐿️💨 This little family just graduated to a big bin—which means they’re officially in stick school 🌿📚 and well on their way to becoming big, wild squirrels.

They’ve also started nibbling on rodent block—their very first solid food. 🥜 Watching them hit these milestones is always exciting, and it’s only possible because of YOU. 💚

Every donation ensures these littles get the very best nutrition, housing, enrichment, and medical care they need to grow strong and healthy. Your support today directly impacts their tomorrow. 🌳✨

🙏 Thank you to all of our incredible supporters. Please consider making a gift to help us continue this life-saving work. 💕

🎓💛 Millersville Internship in Action! 💛🎓

Our newest Millersville University intern, Ella, joined our Founder, Betsy, to release Patient 25-563, a wayward groundhog who found herself stranded in Lancaster City. 🏙️🐾

After a safe night at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation and a hearty meal, this young groundhog was ready for freedom. Together, Betsy and Ella relocated her to a secure, natural habitat 🌳✨—and she was gone in a flash! ⚡️

Internships are an incredible way for students like Ella to gain hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation, conservation, and community engagement. At the same time, their fresh energy and ideas help us grow as an organization. 🙌

We are proud to partner with Millersville University to provide these opportunities for future wildlife professionals! 🦫🐿️🦝

🌙✨ The last of our Spring Virginia opossums has officially been released! Patient 25-380 has left the nest and is now roaming the night in search of snacks. 🌿🐾

This was our very first year raising opossums, and what a whirlwind it has been! 💨💚 From learning curves to late-night feedings, we wouldn’t trade a second of it. And guess what? We’re already looking forward to doing it all again!

Acorn Acres is the ONLY facility in Lancaster County that accepts Virginia opossums. With your continued support, we are honored to rise to this opportunity and give these incredible little marsupials the second chance they deserve. 🦉🌎

🌻 In the blink of an eye, summer has ended… and so has our time with our incredible interns! 💚

This amazing team helped us define and write our Virginia opossum protocol. 📝 With this being our very first year running opossums, there was a lot to figure out—on top of adjusting to our new space. These three rose to the challenge, made the project their own, and successfully raised and released more than 160 Virginia opossums! 🦔✨

We are going to miss them tremendously and wish them an amazing senior year. 🎓💫

Internships are vital not just for students but for organizations like ours. They give future professionals hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation, while giving us fresh perspectives, extra helping hands, and the chance to inspire the next generation of conservationists. 🌎🐾

Offering internships is something we are incredibly proud of. 🌿💪

🌟 Belvedere the Virginia Opossum 🌟
This handsome boy had some roam time today! 🐾 While he wasn’t too thrilled about the camera 📸, he absolutely loved stretching his legs and sniffing EVERYTHING in sight 👃💨.

Did you know?
👀 Opossums don’t rely heavily on eyesight—especially in the dark.
👂 Their hearing is excellent, helping them stay safe at night.
👃 But it’s their sense of smell that really guides them through the world.

Roam time isn’t just exercise for Belvedere’s body—it’s also a workout for his brain! 🧠 And here’s a fun fact: an opossum’s brain is only about the size of a walnut 🌰—small, but mighty for survival.

Belvedere reminds us that every creature is uniquely designed to thrive in its own way. 💚

🐿️ Meet Chipmunk 25-549, better known as Mr. Green! 🌱 He’s one of a rare litter of SIX that came to us thanks to our friend Liz at Pine Creek Animal Hospital in Gap. 💚 Can you see the pure joy and weekend excitement on his little face?

Full litters of chipmunks are uncommon since they’re usually safe underground, but this little family was unearthed when an AC unit was replaced. ❄️➡️🏠

These tiny speedsters are fun, fast, and full of personality. Soon, they’ll be moving into a tent for feeding time to keep them safe and contained as they grow. ✨

We can’t wait to watch Mr. Green and his siblings thrive! 🌿💨
