Dear Friends and Clients,

Dr. Koss and his family welcomed me into their wonderful practice almost 2.5 years ago, and I have loved being a part of Baystone Equine. I have equally loved getting to know all of you and your horses. It is with mixed emotions that I will be leaving the practice at the end of September to pursue a new opportunity. It has been such a pleasure getting to know you all and be entrusted with the care of your horses. Thank you for making my time at Baystone Equine so memorable.

Sincerely,
Dr. Abby

📍Erickson’s Ice Cream, Maynard MA

A necessary stop 🍦

Erickson’s Ice Cream is by far one of our favorite stops (you may have noticed it’s made the page before!) While out of our normal radius, it is worth the drive. Large serving sizes, very creamy consistency, and a large favor selection. The price is a little steeper than some of its competitors, but that’s never been enough to deter us! Our one other critic is the Mint Chip is white instead of green. Emily got Peanut Butter Bliss and Dr. Abby went with Roasted Almond Butter. Well worth the stop (or drive)!

‼️ Health Alert ‼️

With all the rain 🌧️ this year, we are seeing an increase in Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) in the area. We recommend a booster vaccination 💉 for any horses that have not received the vaccine within the last 3 months.

Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is carried by mayflies. Clinical signs are varied but can include lethargy, fever, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and laminitis. PHF can be fatal and the vaccination helps to prevent and decrease the severity of disease.

Cleaning water buckets/troughs daily 🪣, turning barn lights off at night 💡(light attracts bugs), and minimizing your horse’s access to freshwater bodies of water 💦 are all ways to help decrease their risk.

Please call 📞 Dr. Abby or Dr. Koss to schedule!

Have a great weekend, Dr. Abby will be on call for emergencies and can be reached at (508) 277-7266.

📍Howard’s Drive In, West Brookfield, MA

An average ice cream 🍦

Howard’s Drive In is an easy stop off of Route 9 for a quick mid-day treat (they also have real food!). Not always a huge flavor selection, but huge portions for an average price. Emily went with mint chocolate chip and Dr. Abby got chocolate peanut butter ripple. A great way to break up the afternoon appointments!

📍Kopp’s Frozen Custard, Glendale, WI

Simply the best 🐮🧀

Kopp’s Frozen Custard is the epitome of Midwest dairy frozen treats. Neither quality nor quantity are sacrificed at Kopp’s. The portions are massive (and generously loaded with toppings) and the price is beyond reasonable. Vanilla, chocolate, and two flavors of the day are the only options but it is always difficult making a choice! Dr. Koss went for the Turtle Sundae flavor and Emily splurged with Turtle Sundae and Razzmatazz. Highly recommend if you’re ever in the Milwaukee area!

Some great advice from the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Happy Fourth of July 🇺🇸 🎆🎇

With the Fourth of July festivities just around the corner, now is a good time to make preparations to keep your horses, farm animals and pets safe during any fireworks that will be happening in your area.

The graphic below lists some tips to get you started. If your horses are staying out overnight, be sure to check your fencing ahead of time and neutralize any hazards like rocks, branches or holes that could lead to injury if the animals start bolting. If you are concerned your animals may get loose, make sure your contact information is on a tag on the halter (provided i’is a breakaway one) or braided in their mane.
Some horses require sedation to help them get through. If you are really worried about your horse's safety, consult your veterinarian about calming agents.

This is also a good time to update and review your fire response program at your barn. Make sure you have the number for the fire department, everyone knows the address of the barn, plenty of fire extinguishers are available, and any fire hazards are removed from the barn.

No matter what your Independence Day plans are, above all please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so EVERYONE may have an enjoyable celebration.

Happy 4th! 🇺🇸

Brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee

📍Rota Spring Farm, Sterling MA

Great ice cream and even better views 🐄🌾

Rota Spring offers a wide selection of hard ice cream flavors all made on site. Large portions at a reasonable price. The BEST chocolate chips in the area! The ice cream does melt fast, so we recommend asking for a cup with your cone. Emily and Dr. Abby went with the mint chip and peanut butter chip, respectively. Worth the stop!
