For the past week, as the President of FFFR, I've been dealing with a difficult situation with a dog who probably should never have been adopted to the family she went to - but even more troubling, when the owner asked for help from the rescue, they refused to take the dog back. As a result, the dog was dumped out of state. My rescue and another rescue joined forces to get the dog back to Connecticut, and a third rescue agreed to take the dog as soon as an appropriate foster could be found. That third rescue is currently finalizing foster placement and we are hoping the dog will be in a long-term foster home by this time next week at the latest.

This situation brings up really troubling issues. *Please be aware: I am not going to publicly name the rescue that refused to take the dog back - I know people are curious and want the rescue "called out" but that is neither the purpose of this post, nor would it do anything except stir up Facebook drama.*

The point is this: there are a number of rescues that ship dogs into the state by the truckload, do not do their due diligence (they often adopt the dogs off the truck or at same-day events, and do NOT do home visits or meet and greets with the entire family and all other pets). Then, when the inevitable problems arise, other rescues are left to pick up the pieces and "save" the dog - AGAIN! This isn't fair to the dogs, isn't fair to the adoptive families, and isn't fair to the rescues standing by the dogs that their rescues should be backing. In the 12+ years I've been doing this, I've taken in more dogs than I can count because other rescues wouldn't take their dogs back.

Whether rescues should be importing in the midst of the current animal welfare crisis is subject for a whole other discussion. My point is this: wherever a dog originates, a reputable rescue should be standing by their dogs! If they're not, they have no business calling themselves a rescue - they're basically just selling dogs. Rescues ask their adopters to give dogs "forever homes". The least a rescue can do is do the same, should the "forever" home end up not being forever!

The good that comes out of this situation is that 3 rescues have been able to work effectively together for the good of the dog!

We are helping to find a foster for 'Lil Spooky so she can move to her new rescue asap! She needs to move quickly! If you live in CT and can foster, please fill out an application and we'll go through it and then forward it to the rescue: https://www.furryfriendsct.org/foster-application

Here's who she is and what she needs :)

✅ Mixed breed dog
✅About 1-1/4 years old
✅Up to date with vaccines
✅Spayed
✅Good with other dogs (needs to be fed separately from other dogs)
✅Very scared right now - she will possibly benefit from living with another confident dog
✅Best in a home without cats
✅Good with slightly older (12 years and older) children
✅Needs patience and time to feel comfortable and safe
✅A quiet atmosphere in the home would be best

We're looking for a family with experience for her. If you've owned dogs before (especially rescue dogs) or if you've fostered before, that would be wonderful! She wouldn't work well as your "first dog". A foster-to-adopt home would also be considered.

'Lil Spooky will need to see the rescue's vet for a complete exam and tests. She has all of her basic vaccines already.

Please get those applications in! What she needs the very MOST is to settle into a home with a loving, patient family and to learn that people are her friends :)

Even though she's terrified right now, she shows absolutely ZERO aggression! She is a GREAT DOG!

PSA: We are a 100% foster-based rescue. We do not have a shelter. We do not have a location that is open to the public. We receive phone calls and texts from people saying "we want to drop off a dog" or "can we come to the shelter and meet your dogs?" NO! Our address is our mailing address only. All of our dogs live in foster homes with private families located throughout the state. We require an approved application before you can meet any of our dogs. Once we approve an application, we bring the dog you'd like to adopt to YOU - we don't have people "come and meet the dog". Thanks for understanding our limitations and rules and above all, thank you all for wanting to rescue!

After WAY too long in boarding, Chip is back in foster care and we couldn't be happier for him. This good boy came to us when he was 10 months old and he's now about 7 years old - he is a very long timer in the rescue!

We're delighted that he's back in foster while we continue to search for a forever home for him!
