Hi pet parents- try to avoid dog treats that contain a lot of molasses. It’s used as a filler and a preservative but it’s still sugar and it isn’t good for dogs teeth or their gut. I used to see it as a more mininimal ingredient but lately I am seeing it in treats as the second or third ingredient which is way too much sugar! It’s great to get in the habit of flipping a bag of treats over and checking out the ingredients list. -Sophia

There’s been a potentially novel canine respiratory illness spreading between dogs. It starts with a cough and nasal congestion and can progress into pneumonia. It’s been confirmed in Massachusets and Rhode Island so I imagine it’s started spreading locally too. If you can reduce the amount that your dogs go to doggy daycare or the dog park I would really recommend it until there’s a better understanding of what is causing this illness and how to treat it. From what I’ve read the researchers are starting to lean towards it being a bacteria but it may be resistant to antibiotics. Try to reduce nose to nose contact between your dogs and any unfamiliar dogs since this illness is most likely spread through droplets. Vets are currently recommending getting dogs up to date on vaccines to help boost their overall immunity. Senior dogs and brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs are at a higher risk. If I learn anything new I’ll send out another update.

With the summer temps rising please remember how the heat will affect your dogs. If you can’t hold your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds then it’s too hot for your pups paws! Try to stick to grassy areas, sidewalks, and shade on hot sunny days
