Warmer weather means more time outdoors—but it also means fleas and ticks are on the rise! These pests aren’t just annoying; they can cause serious health issues like Lyme disease, skin irritations, and flea-borne illnesses.

How to Keep Your Pet Safe:
✅ Use Preventative Treatments – Ask your vet about the best flea & tick prevention for your pet.
🛁 Schedule Regular Grooming – Routine baths and grooming help spot fleas & ticks early.
🔍 Check After Outdoor Adventures – Inspect ears, paws, and belly after walks or playtime.
🌿 Maintain Your Yard – Keep grass short and remove debris where pests can hide.

Trimming vs. Dremeling: What’s Best for Your Pup’s Nails? 🐾

Keeping your dog’s nails in good shape is essential for their comfort and health, but should you go with trimming or Dremeling? Here’s the difference:

✂ Trimming
🔹 Uses nail clippers to cut the nail straight across.
🔹 Quick and efficient—great for dogs used to nail care.
🔹 Can leave sharper edges that may snag on surfaces.

🌀 Dremeling
🔹 Uses a rotary tool to grind nails down, smoothing as it goes.
🔹 Ideal for thick or dark nails where the quick is harder to see.
🔹 Takes a little longer but leaves a rounded, polished finish.

Which one is right for your dog? It depends on their comfort level and nail type, but at Muddy Mutts, we offer both! Book an appointment today and let’s keep those paws healthy and happy! 🐶✨

What Are A**l Glands?

A**l glands (or sacs) are small scent glands located on either side of a dog’s a**s. Normally, they empty naturally when your dog poops, but sometimes they become impacted, infected, or abscessed, causing discomfort.

Internal vs. External Expression

🔹 External Expression – Done by applying pressure outside the a**s to release fluid. This method is common among groomers but may not fully empty the glands.
🔹 Internal Expression – A more thorough method where a gloved finger is inserted into the re**um to manually empty the glands. This is usually done by a vet.

How Often Should They Be Expressed?

✔️ Most dogs don’t need manual expression – Their glands empty naturally.
✔️ Some dogs (especially small breeds) may need it every 4-6 weeks if prone to impaction.
✔️ Watch for signs like: Scooting, excessive licking, swelling, pain, or a strong odor.

Who Should Express A**l Glands?

✅ Veterinarians – Best for impacted, infected, or recurring issues.
✅ Professional Groomers – Many offer external expression during grooming.
✅ Pet Owners – Can learn to do it, but improper technique can cause injury or infection.

🚨 If you notice swelling, bleeding, or extreme pain, or if your dog has frequent gland issues, consult a vet ASAP! Chronic problems can indicate allergies, infections, or dietary issues.
