Reining Horses = Pro Athletes
Ever wonder how long a reining horse’s career lasts?

Think NFL…
Most top football players retire in their early 30s. The game is hard on the body—fast, intense, and unforgiving.

Same goes for reining horses.
They start competing at age 3 (like age 18 in human years) and hit their prime fast. By 5 or 6, they’ve already done a lot of their big winning.

These horses are the elite athletes of the horse world—
Quick off the line, precise under pressure, and trained to dominate the arena.

Every run is a playoff moment.
They won’t last forever, but when they’re great…
You feel it.

To help manage your horse’s winter coat

An effective strategy is controlling their exposure to light. Horses’ coat growth is influenced by the amount of daylight they receive, as their bodies naturally produce more melatonin in response to shorter days, which triggers the growth of a thicker winter coat. To counteract this and encourage a shorter coat, you can manipulate their light exposure.

Using Lights with Timers:
You can use artificial lighting in the barn to extend your horse’s “daylight” hours. By using bright lights on a timer, you can mimic the longer daylight periods of summer, signaling to your horse’s body to stop growing such a thick coat. Here’s how to do it effectively:
1. Timing the Lights: Set the lights to come on in the morning and turn off in the evening, simulating the longer daylight hours. Typically, you should aim for about 16-18 hours of light exposure per day. This extended light period helps suppress the production of melatonin, thus preventing the horse from growing a heavy winter coat.
2. Gradual Adjustment: If possible, gradually increase the amount of artificial light over a period of several weeks before the colder months set in. This gradual approach will help your horse adjust to the light changes more effectively.
3. Light Intensity: Use high-wattage, bright lights to create a natural daylight effect. Make sure the lighting is evenly distributed throughout the barn or stall, so the horse receives consistent light exposure. LED lights are an energy-efficient option for this purpose.
4. Timing Duration: The lights should be kept on for about 16-18 hours per day, ensuring your horse gets enough light to disrupt the natural coat-regulating process. A timer will help you maintain a consistent schedule and ensure your horse gets the right amount of light each day.

This method can be especially useful for horses that live in stalls or barns, as they may not be exposed to the natural sunlight that outdoor horses get. By combining light manipulation with regular clipping and proper grooming, you can help keep your horse’s coat short and manageable throughout the winter.

The Grit of Reining

The spin comes sharp, a whirling storm,
A blur of muscle, trained and warm.
The sliding stop—no room for fear,
They dig in deep; the line runs clear.

It’s sweat and strain, it’s dirt and bone,
A test of wills, the rider’s throne.
No easy wins, no glory cheap,
This bond is forged, and forged down deep.

Let others cheer for fleeting fame,
But here, the horse earns more than a name.
It’s blood and dust, the work, the pain—
The toughest ride, the purest reign.

Swift and steady, they glide and spin,
A dance of power deep within.
With every slide, the earth does sing,
Graceful reins guide on unseen wings.

The rhythm beats, a bond so tight,
Horse and rider, day and night.
In every stop, in every turn,
The fire of freedom will always burn.
