Michigan’s State Veterinarian is urging owners to monitor their pets closely amid the statewide air quality alert:​

“Animals react to poor air conditions much like humans do, and certain groups—such as birds, young or older animals, and those with heart or respiratory issues—face higher risks during air quality alerts,” said State Veterinarian, Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “MDARD urges owners to monitor their animals for signs of coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, watery eyes, low energy, changes in how they sound, reduced appetite and reduced thirst. If you see anything concerning, contact your veterinarian.”​

Keep your pets safe with these tips:​

- Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors.​
- Limit the amount of time pets spend outdoors.​
- Keep doors and windows closed and keep fans or air conditioning units on.

Dealing with Uninvited Guests: Sheep & Goat Lice

Managing a herd often means keeping a close eye on skin and coat health, especially during the cooler months. Lice are a common challenge, but staying proactive can make all the difference for your animals' comfort.

Adult lice are approximately 1.8 mm in length and 0.6 mm wide. They have a broad reddish head and a pale brown/white body. They are often called "walking dandruff" as sometimes the only way you can see them is when they move!

Quick Tips for Your Herd:

- Spot the Signs: Look for frequent scratching, rubbing against fences, or patches of broken and thinning wool or hair.
-Check Regularly: Part the fleece or hair in several spots—especially along the neck, shoulders, and back—to look for the tiny insects or their eggs (nits).
- Treatment Timing: If you find lice, it’s best to treat the entire herd at once to prevent them from passing the infestation back and forth. This often will require a second, follow up treatment as well.
- Consult Your Vet: Always check in with your veterinarian to ensure you are using the correct dosage and product for your species. Lice can cause life threatening anemia.

NOTE: They are NOT Zoonotic! And they are treatable! You do NOT need to panic!

🌧🐐 Spring Hoof Care for Goats

Spring is mud season here in Michigan and wet conditions can wreak havoc on goat hooves. Soft, muddy ground accelerates overgrowth, causes uneven wear, and creates the perfect environment for bacteria.

Here’s what to check when trimming your goats this spring:

1️⃣ Overgrowth – Toes curling under or heels folding increase joint strain. Trim so the hoof sits flat.
2️⃣ Pocketing & Debris – Remove packed mud and manure to prevent infection. You can gently use the tip of the trimmers, or a small hoof pick.
3️⃣ Early Infection Signs – Foul odor, soft or crumbly horn, redness, or limping? Don’t wait. Treat early!
4️⃣ Balance – Make sure each claw bears weight evenly. Uneven hooves + mud = higher injury risk. And don't trim of those toe points! Just like our big toe, the tip of the claw is there for... BALANCE.
5️⃣ Trim Depth – Stop before hitting live tissue, especially when hooves are soft from moisture. If you are unsure, stop there: better to under trim than over trim.

Check hooves every 4–6 weeks during wet periods. High-risk herds may need trimming more often.

🚨 If you see persistent lameness, swelling above the hoof, or repeated infections, it’s time to call your friendly neighbourhood vet... and I know of a couple good ones! :)

Healthy hooves = happy, productive goats!

So, I will just share this recipe to help remove the smell of skunk spray off of your dog.... for no reason....

1 qt (1 L) Hydrogen Peroxide
1/3 cup Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
2 tbsp Dishsoap

While Maeve is not always on my "nice" list, Santa seems to deem her on his "good girl" list! 🤷‍♀️ She asked him for more belly rubs and pinecones to chase! 🎅
