Saddled up six head Saturday and had ourselves a session on moving out in the round pen. As always, Riggs was my main man, even helping me carry all six saddles down to the round pen. He is so tolerant and gentle! Riggs has helped me out quite a lot with this c**t starting stuff.
I started out by saddling everyone individually, then they stood tied outside the round pen until I had them all ready. Sawny and Mozzy were the easiest. Sawny’s an old hand at saddling and has 17 rides, but I threw him in on this session anyways. He was the only one besides Riggs and I that has done this exercise before.
Mozzy had been saddled and shown how to pony on Friday, so this was his third time being saddled. He has been super gentle and hasn’t offered to buck or be tight at all.
The sorrel, Danny, was next. He was tight, but untracked and didn’t offer to buck this time!

The red roan started out being terrified of the saddle blanket, but once he settled down I saddled him up and he untracked without bucking this time as well.

The 6-year-old gelding Soup got in on this session. Supposedly this horse had been ridden, so I suggested throwing the blanket up on his back to saddle him and he had a big reaction to it. I went ahead and bagged him for the first time. He had a big reaction to the bag, trying to run off and escape, but eventually settled.

Then I saddled him up. He was extremely tight with the saddle and tried “bucking” but it was a very hilarious attempt. He looked like a fish trying to swim on land. He eventually figured it out but it took the entire session and more for him to acquire a better attitude.

Finally I put all of them in there together and we went to moving out. Soup had himself one high speed runaway moment, but otherwise I didn’t see anyone really blow up. All in all the group moved out pretty nicely despite some kicking. Moved them both directions and they were fairly reasonable about facing up to change directions, then I pulled Mozzy, Danny, and the red roan.

I worked Sawny and Soup in there together, as they were causing the most trouble. Then I pulled Sawny and worked Soup alone. Soup moved with the comfort of another horse no problem, but he was not happy about moving out in there by himself, and wanted to park next to where the other horses were tied and kick at me viciously. That’s a tough thing to correct as a person needs a long weapon, and you have to be in kicking range to correct the behavior. Riggs did excellent and kept himself and me just barely out of harms way. I finally found something that worked, and Soup ended in a better spot. He definitely has some more work to do.
It takes a lot of time and effort to record everything I do and get these videos posted in a timely manner. I captured, edited, and posted five videos from this big session yesterday, and I hope you guys enjoy watching a few of them!
