Had some fun Tuesday over at Spotted Eagle. I took Riggs, Sawny, Mozzy, and Danny.

I did a lot of playing around with Riggs, as he’s an absolute blast in the water! He helped me with the c**ts also, giving them a little extra comfort during their first session in the water.
Riggs The Water Horse: VIDEO SOON

I put little rides on the three 2-year-olds in the water. It was a first ride for Danny, and a second ride for Mozzy. Danny and Mozzy got all sorts of desensitizing and figured out how to disengage, turn around, and take forward steps in the water. Danny was a little worried at first but overall was quite gentle. Mozzy was very concerned about the water to start out but eventually settled in and got really nice to be around. I was quite happy with how both of them turned out during their individual sessions.

Sawny did a little more, walking and trotting and generally enjoying the coolness on a 100+ degree day. This was ride 19 for him, so he’s pretty comfortable packing a person around at this point. He wanted to jump into the water at first, and was surprised when it got deeper as he continued wading in!

Ole’ Soup needs some manners!

These are all screenshots from working on getting Soup to move out in the round pen by himself on Saturday. Riggs was an excellent sport about getting viciously kicked at. Soup definitely has some work to do!

Checked on the yearlings in the Pines on Friday, and they’re looking fabulous.

Rootbeer has gotten so friendly, and Tugboat is simply a pet. They’re both growing and maturing nicely. Tugboat is completely healed from his crazy shoulder injury earlier this spring. They’re a pretty classy pair, and don’t look like the typical wonky yearlings. Looking forward to starting them both!

Saddled up six head Saturday and had ourselves a session on moving out in the round pen. As always, Riggs was my main man, even helping me carry all six saddles down to the round pen. He is so tolerant and gentle! Riggs has helped me out quite a lot with this c**t starting stuff.

I started out by saddling everyone individually, then they stood tied outside the round pen until I had them all ready. Sawny and Mozzy were the easiest. Sawny’s an old hand at saddling and has 17 rides, but I threw him in on this session anyways. He was the only one besides Riggs and I that has done this exercise before.

Mozzy had been saddled and shown how to pony on Friday, so this was his third time being saddled. He has been super gentle and hasn’t offered to buck or be tight at all.

The sorrel, Danny, was next. He was tight, but untracked and didn’t offer to buck this time!

The red roan started out being terrified of the saddle blanket, but once he settled down I saddled him up and he untracked without bucking this time as well.

The 6-year-old gelding Soup got in on this session. Supposedly this horse had been ridden, so I suggested throwing the blanket up on his back to saddle him and he had a big reaction to it. I went ahead and bagged him for the first time. He had a big reaction to the bag, trying to run off and escape, but eventually settled.

Then I saddled him up. He was extremely tight with the saddle and tried “bucking” but it was a very hilarious attempt. He looked like a fish trying to swim on land. He eventually figured it out but it took the entire session and more for him to acquire a better attitude.

Finally I put all of them in there together and we went to moving out. Soup had himself one high speed runaway moment, but otherwise I didn’t see anyone really blow up. All in all the group moved out pretty nicely despite some kicking. Moved them both directions and they were fairly reasonable about facing up to change directions, then I pulled Mozzy, Danny, and the red roan.
Group Session: https://youtu.be/NuqVrOFj3iY?si=u5BZ8zt3Bkx3AbQg

I worked Sawny and Soup in there together, as they were causing the most trouble. Then I pulled Sawny and worked Soup alone. Soup moved with the comfort of another horse no problem, but he was not happy about moving out in there by himself, and wanted to park next to where the other horses were tied and kick at me viciously. That’s a tough thing to correct as a person needs a long weapon, and you have to be in kicking range to correct the behavior. Riggs did excellent and kept himself and me just barely out of harms way. I finally found something that worked, and Soup ended in a better spot. He definitely has some more work to do.

It takes a lot of time and effort to record everything I do and get these videos posted in a timely manner. I captured, edited, and posted five videos from this big session yesterday, and I hope you guys enjoy watching a few of them!

Going to be a busy day! I will update how the day goes when we are all done.

I do a lot of my c**t stuff by myself, but I’m never truly totally alone down here. Riggs helps me so much with these c**ts. I’m very fortunate to have him here!

A humongous pet peeve of mine is when people black out the breeder and current owner on a set of registration papers. So what if the papers aren’t in the current owner’s name yet, as long as a correctly signed transfer accompanies the papers. This particular set of papers was sent off to be transferred the day they showed up. But what a punch in the face to the breeder to cover up their name, especially if the horse is a good one. It takes a lot of effort to breed and raise horses, and hiding a breeder’s name while advertising papers just seems disrespectful. If I look at a set of papers and recognize some horses in there, it’s sure cool to see where that horse came from. Plus, if a person likes what they see, knowing who the breeder is can only bring more potential customers to the breeder. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Ha!

On a different note, I’m stoked to have had the chance to purchase a filly with papers like these. Rootbeer is just a yearling and has a lot of adventures ahead. Bred by Walker Ranch in Montana, Rootbeer is a half sister to JoJo and Dill. She should be pretty doggone cool under saddle!

I simply can’t express how happy I am with Cake.

She put in one hell of a hard day today! We had a big gather in super rough country, then trailed those pairs several miles down a two-track that the cows did NOT want to go down. Had one determined runback calf, which Cake and I eventually roped, and Cake was an absolute superstar holding from the horn and handling that rope as we brought the calf back. This was only her third time ever having a rope on something live, and she was so confident and solid. Cake is still just shy of ride 40. I messed with my bullwhip quite a lot today as well, and it was her first exposure to that, but she didn’t seem to mind. I had her in some really nasty terrain and she really took care of us today. I even killed a rattlesnake while I was on foot leading her through a nasty draw and she just stood patiently and waited for me! This mare is just so doggone cool.

Cake finally had a big enough ride that she actually felt a little tired, and would rate that monstrous walk. Usually she’s walking out so nicely that she’s out walking everyone else’s horses. While I appreciate a c**t that wants to walk out nicely, maybe she will find she doesn’t have to hurry all the time.

Cake is an Awesome Roany daughter out of a massive Rolling Jax Copper mare that goes back to War Concho and Ciderwood. She was bred by Gene and Jan Hetletved in North Dakota. I’m hooked on these horses!

The big bay Hetletved c**t earned a name, and it’s MOZZY!

This guy got in on the trailer loading session today, and he was by far the easiest. I literally walked up to the trailer and stepped in and he followed me. I’m super excited to really get going with this c**t. I’ve had my eye on him since he was a baby, so it’s pretty cool to actually have gotten the chance to snag him as a two-year-old. He’s friendly, willing, and brave. Mozzy has pretty cool feel and is an absolute beefcake already. It’ll be interesting to watch Mozzy and his 7/8ths brother Sawny mature and see which one ends up taller and/or thicker built. These c**ts are extremely consistent!

Bred by Gene and Jan Hetletved in North Dakota, Mozzy is an Awesome Roany son out of a Rolling Jax Copper daughter, and goes back to Zan Gold Jackson, High Rolling Roany, and Apple Jax on the maternal side. He is at least a:
- 1/2 brother to Sully and Pete
- 3/4 brother to Riggs and Cake
-7/8ths brother to Sawny
-genetic full brother to Tugboat
-actual full brother to Soda
Needless to say I’m pretty hooked on these Awesome Roany horses, and all the ones I’ve listed here are ones I’ve owned, ridden, and/or started. They have been absolutely FABULOUS horses for me, and I really enjoy ranching on them.

Mozzy is the third bonehead getting in on the brain surgery next week, and it can only do him good!

It was a productive day for these two gentlemen. Both c**ts had their first trailering lesson on lead, and received their first ever trim. Of course they had been trailered several times before, but never wearing a halter.

The red roan guy is a little more rambunctious, and took a little longer to consider actually stepping in the trailer, but he wasn’t at all bad. He was a little interesting to trim but we figured it out and he ended in a good place. This guy has nicely shaped feet, and they didn’t need much correcting. He’s also learning how to stand tied solid, and is responding quite well.

The sorrel guy jumped right in the trailer the moment I asked the first time. I was surprised that he was so willing! This guy is the gentlest of this batch of c**ts. He had a little trouble wanting to pick his feet up to trim, but I was able to get around him and he too ended in a nice place. His feet were in a little tougher shape, but they cleaned up very nicely. As far as standing tied, he wanted to try pulling back at first, but now he is understanding how to come off his own pressure a little better. I like his friendly little brain!

Both of these boys are from Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program in North Dakota. They are paternal half-brothers by Coppers High Dasher, a Rolling Jax Copper son. The red roan is out of a High Rolling Lucky mare with Lonsum Drift 045 and Charlie Blaze. The sorrel is out of a Lonsum Drift 045 mare with High Rolling Lucky and High Rolling Roany again.

Don’t tell them, but the three young boys have an appointment for brain surgery next week.

Here’s some cell phone pictures of the red roan stud c**t that I have in for a start! This guy will be marketed after he’s started, and I will get him gelded during that time as well.

Of the three 2-year-old stud c**ts I have to start right now, this guy is the most sensitive to cues. He really wants to be friendly, and should make a really nice horse. I’m looking forward to getting these guys under saddle!

This red roan guy is a son of Coppers High Dasher out of a daughter of High Rolling Lucky. He has a close shot of Lonsum Drift 045 in his dam’s side as well. Lots of High Rolling Roany in this pedigree! He hails from Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program in North Dakota.

It’s high time I started introducing the new guys around here!

We had a chance to make a trip to Gene’s last week with two old friends from the college horsemanship days. Jen was here from Pennsylvania and Brittany met up with us from Circle, and we made the trek to Gene’s place over in North Dakota. It was a super fun trip, and we ended up coming back with a couple more than I had anticipated!

This handsome bay stud c**t is another one of those Awesome Roany horses that I talk so much about. He’s a 3/4 brother to Riggs, Cake, Sawny, and a pile of others I’ve had around and ranch rode. Since I saw pictures of this guy as a baby, I have referred to him as the “Music Note” as it looks like he has a note on his forehead. I still haven’t settled on a name for him.

I’m in the middle of gentling and halterbreaking with the three 2-year-olds, and I’m sure enjoying all of them at this point. The bay was the most standoffish to start out with. He was very interested in me all the time, but just not quite ready to go all in on being friendly. I went through and haltered all of the boys twice, and this third session with the bay was all it took. He really let down and relaxed, and I think I’ve got him in my pocket now. It doesn’t generally take these Awesome Roany horses very long to come around. This bay is a very similar size and shape to my Sawny gelding, another Awesome Roany 2-year-old. I’m sure excited to get this new guy going under saddle. He should be a good one!
