A rare but very serious disease we want pet owners to know about — especially here in Oklahoma. We've had 2 separate suspected cases this week, and Spring has just started..
🩺 What Is Bobcat Fever?
Bobcat fever, medically known as cytauxzoonosis, is a tick-borne disease caused by the parasite Cytauxzoon felis.
Bobcats are the natural host and often carry the parasite without becoming ill — but when domestic cats are infected, the disease can progress rapidly and become life-threatening.
🐱 How Do Cats Get Bobcat Fever?
The disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected tick, most commonly the Lone Star tick.
Cats do not get bobcat fever from direct contact with bobcats or other cats — ticks are required for transmission.
🚨 Symptoms to Watch For
Signs often appear suddenly and worsen quickly. Common symptoms include:
• Lethargy and weakness
• High fever
• Loss of appetite
• Pale or yellow gums
• Rapid or labored breathing
• Dehydration
• Hiding or sudden behavior changes
This is considered a medical emergency. Early intervention is critical.
🔬 How Is Bobcat Fever Diagnosed?
Diagnosis may involve:
• Bloodwork to assess organ function and red blood cell health
• Microscopic examination of blood cells
• Specialized testing to identify the parasite
Because symptoms can mimic other illnesses, testing is essential for accurate diagnosis.
💉 Can Bobcat Fever Be Treated?
Yes — but treatment is intensive and time-sensitive.
Management often includes:
• Hospitalization
• Antiprotozoal medications
• Supportive care such as IV fluids, pain control, and nutritional support
With early and aggressive treatment, survival rates have improved significantly compared to the past.
🛡️ Prevention Is Key
The best protection against bobcat fever is year-round tick prevention, even for cats who spend limited time outdoors.
Cats that go outside, live near wooded areas, or have exposure to tall grass are at higher risk.
🧡 Why Awareness Matters
Bobcat fever can progress rapidly, and waiting “to see if they improve” can be dangerous. If your cat seems suddenly unwell — especially with fever or lethargy — prompt veterinary care can be lifesaving.
