What people think I do for Scaly Tails: take my pets to schools, parties, & events to talk about them & let people touch / hold them.

What I actually do for Scaly Tails: multiple daily salad feedings, handle bugs for feedings, thaw rodents for feedings, constant enclosure clean-outs & refreshing. Unexpected vet visits to sometimes include administering oral medicines, eye drops, shots, & more. Building enclosures & always trying to provide the best of the best for these amazing creatures. Building trust & bonds with the animals. On top of responding to emails, inquiries, & scheduling events (the clerical side of ST). 💚

Many people don’t realize this but 90% of our reptiles are animals that were people’s pets that they decided to re-home to us or asked that we take in. You would be surprised how many we have had to turn away just because we do not have the space although I hate to do it. With that said, there has been a time where I’ve crossed paths with someone who admired what I did & absolutely praised me for it & asked me to take in their pet due to them moving. I was very excited to do so, only for a year down the road this person to request the animal back. I let them know we had grown attached to this animal, & we’re honestly a bit confused as the pet was then demanded back. That’s a whole ‘nother story in & of itself, but it broke my heart. Also, it should be noted that many of the animals rehomed to us are of ages unknown. There are estimates & guesses but truly rare that we ever know their true age. (For example: it is clear Ricky is older than originally thought & his time with us is slowly coming to an end😭. Trust me when I say he’s been getting all the extra lovins)

So many people have no clue what goes on behind the scenes, but that’s why I wanted to share with you all just a snippet of what happens in the background🩷

On another note — I wanted to let everyone know we are currently booking into mid December for weekend parties. All other weekends leading up to that are booked. I also want to remind everyone that we do tend to book 4-5 weeks out so please keep that in mind. If you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email us🩷💚

Want to know one of the best feelings? When I’ve done a birthday party for a child & the following year they want me to come back🥹🥰 Three families over the course of just my 2 years in business have had me come or have booked to have me come back out AGAIN! It is the biggest compliment & makes me so happy that the child(ren) loved Scaly Tails enough to choose us over all the other fun birthday options there are! So this post is to say THANK YOU to those that have had us come out once, twice, or even more! Y’all are truly the best🩷💚 Check out this cutie holding Blanche his last two birthdays🫶🏻

We have some exciting things planned for the month of October! We will be CHANGING HOURS on Fridays to close at 3:00 PM! With this change, you can now book parties on Friday evenings! On October 9th, we will have a firefighter visit and craft for Fire Prevention Day! On October 17th, we will have our very first Babies, Bagels, Brews & Bookworms for open play, a book exchange, Mama craft and more! We are so excited to welcome Scaly Tails RVA for TWO events this month on October 24th for dinner and October 30th for lunch! We will have a costume party, where your kids will learn about some reptile friends, as well as, get to hold them too! We will also have pizza for lunch/ dinner! More information will be coming soon on how to sign up! Spots are LIMITED for these events, so turn on notifications! We will be finishing out the month with a craft and free treat when you come dressed in your costume on Halloween!

Throughout the month, we will continue to have Toddles & Tunes on Mondays 10-10:45. On Wednesdays, we will have Once Upon a Craft at 10:00 for our art class and will read a coordinating story! You will sign up for the classes and open play on our website!

This little guy snuck into my kids school over the weekend and found himself in a sticky situation. The teachers discovered him as they arrived this morning & contacted me to go help out! Happy to report that he has been successfully removed from the double sided tape & safely returned to the outdoors🥰

When Sheldon isn’t visiting schools, daycares, & assisted living facilities, he spends his time wondering why the squirrels are always at his lunch table. Sam’s been slowly but surely working on that tail regrowth. Brutus’ was looking cute getting rid of some old scales, & then one day recently while at a stop light - Brutus’ original owner’s mom pulled up beside us at a stop light & when she said “Hi” to Brutus… Brutus waved🤩🤩 We hope everyone is having an amazing summer!! I promise we do much better at posting once school is back in session🤪

Timmy takes down a worm🪱

Idk what it is about watching them eat, but I will find myself just sitting & watching all our pets munch down on their meal. I mean watch him “lick his lips” 🥹😂 & can’t forget that cute smile in the first pic!

Anyways, I just wanted to drop in & say we hope everyone is having an amazing summer! We may not be as quick to answer emails & inquiries during this time due to being on the road / at shows every day but we appreciate your patience and will get back to you as soon as we can🩷💚

✨SAM UPDATE✨

To keep it very short and sweet. Sam had his tail amputated. Sam recovered & had sutures removed. ALL WAS WELL. Until, he then decided it would be a good time to drop his “tail” but instead only dropped the small piece of back end where it was sutured🙃🙃🙃 Why wouldn’t he wait til after amputation to drop it?🥲 But he’s doing great and healing very well!!🩷 Now I thought his tail wouldn’t grow back due to the sutures and cauterizing, but now that he’s dropped that back piece… I guess anything is possible😅

Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision.

It’s okay to be fearful of the unknown or something we don’t understand entirely, but I can’t tell you how many kids (& adults) are SO PROUD of themselves after facing a fear🤩 I absolutely love watching kids go from nervous, & skeptical to curious, & brave!🥰

We made it through Maycember🥳 & we hope you all survived it too😅

As summer is beginning, we wanted to remind you all of a few things: summer weekday events are ENTIRELY filled & we are so excited to visit everyone at summer camps & daycares! We only have two or three weekend spots available for birthday parties now through August & believe it or not… are already booking into September for birthdays🤯

Speaking of visiting camps & daycares; if a copy of our COI, a W9, or any additional paperwork is needed, be sure to let us know as far in advance as possible so that we can get everything needed over to you. We understand new procedures & protocols may be put in place, so once that occurs, be sure to reach out & let us know as soon as it takes effect. We strive to be proactive & want to ensure we take care of everything on our end so we can provide the best service possible🥰

P.S: One day next week I will be sharing an update on Sam & his tail — all is good! He is great but y’all will NOT believe what he did😏
