Bark-ery Backstory

The Adelbrook Bark-ery was started to provide a safe (and fun) place for the neuro-diverse 18-21 year old students, who attend the Adelbrook Transitional Academy, to learn and practice important work skills. Our students do everything from baking to banking in our commerical kitchen and educational retail store. Students learn and practice grocery shopping, reading a recipe, food prep and safety, customer service, money skills, social skills, janitorial skills, how to complete inventory, packaging and labelling and how to appropriately interact with dogs. The goal of the Transitional Academy and the Bark-ery are the same, to prepare students for life after graduation. We often say we are selling the students’ skills one dog treat at a time. Our products are great but the students are amazing! We allow for independence and support our students when needed in order to maximize their skill set.

We have been fortunate to have met many local artians and craftspeople who consign both human and pet related items in our store. They help us promote our mission and all have chosen to give back to us by profit sharing. The students learn about these vendor items and enjoy telling customers about them. These partnerships have allowed for another job task to be practiced as well, inventory.

Please join us in store or at one of the many events we participate in each year! Dogs are welcome in store too! Check out our students’ accomplishments while getting your pup all natural, handmade dog treats or pupcakes. While you’re there, book a dog birthday party or dog wedding!
