Pretty flowers ≠ safe for pets. 🌸

Some of the most common plants in homes and gardens are actually toxic to dogs and cats. Lilies, tulips, azaleas, and daffodils can all cause serious reactions, and symptoms don't always show up right away.

Toxic plant ingestion can affect the kidneys, heart, and nervous system depending on the plant and how much your pet got into. Even a small amount of certain plants (lilies, especially) can be life-threatening for cats.

If you know or suspect your pet ate something toxic, don't wait for symptoms to get worse. Time matters. Our team is here to help.

🎉 Happy National Mutt Day!
July 31st is all about celebrating our amazing mixed-breed dogs: the loyal, loving, and one-of-a-kind pups we share our lives with 💕

Mixed-breed dogs make up about 60–70% of all dogs in the U.S., from designer doodles to classic “Heinz 57” shelter specials. They may come in all shapes and sizes, but one universal fact is that mutts are just as smart, sweet, and special as any purebred dog! Many go on to become talented service dogs, therapy companions, and athletic sports champions, not to mention the millions who serve as beloved family members.

The best part? No two mutts are alike - each one has a story (and a look!) that’s completely unique. 🐶✨

📸 Is your pup a mutt? We’d love to celebrate them today! Drop a photo in the comments and tell us their story so we can shower them with love on their special day.

As Connecticut enters a stretch of dangerously hot and humid weather, Governor Lamont has activated the state’s Extreme Hot Weather Protocol from Sunday, July 28 through the evening of Wednesday, July 30. Heat advisories and air quality alerts are in effect across many counties, with real-feel temperatures expected to reach 100°F or higher.

While these alerts are crucial for public health, they’re just as important for our pets, who often suffer silently during extreme weather conditions.

At Pieper Veterinary, we want to make sure your furry family members stay safe, hydrated, and cool during this heat wave. Here's what Connecticut pet owners need to know:

☀️ Heat Dangers for Pets
Extreme temperatures can quickly become dangerous for animals, especially:

-Dogs with flat faces (like pugs or Frenchies)
-Elderly pets or very young puppies/kittens
-Pets with respiratory or heart conditions
-Thick-coated breeds and overweight pets
-Even a short walk on hot pavement or too much sun can lead to heatstroke, burned paw pads, or respiratory distress.

🐾 Pet Safety Tips During a Heat Wave

-Avoid outdoor activity during peak hours (10 a.m.–6 p.m.)
-Keep walks short and stay on shaded or grassy surfaces
-Never leave pets in cars, even for a few minutes
-Offer plenty of cool water - consider ice cubes as treats!
-Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: heavy panting, drooling, unsteadiness, or vomiting

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, treat it as an emergency. Call or head directly to our 24/7 Emergency Hospital at Pieper Memorial in Middletown.

Stay cool, stay safe, and give your pets some extra love (and ice cubes) this week!

🔥🍔 Grilling Season Safety Tips for Pet Owners!

Firing up the grill? Sunny summer weather makes for the perfect BBQ, but if your pets are joining the fun, make sure you’re keeping an eye out so your cookout doesn’t turn into a trip to the veterinarian

🐶🍗 Common Cookout Hazards for Pets:
• Corn cobs, fruit pits, & bones- These can lodge in your pet’s GI tract and often require surgery to remove. Our surgery team removes dozens of corn cobs from dogs every year!
• Grease, food trash, & drippings- Dispose of skewers, wrappings, and food scraps carefully. If there’s food residue, some dogs may even eat aluminum foil or gravel!
• Hot grills & curious paws- That grill surface can cause serious burns. Keep pets safely away while it’s in use, or consider having them chill indoors if the temptation is too much.

A little extra caution goes a long way in keeping your furry friends safe while you enjoy some summer sizzle! 🌭🐾

🍇 Let’s Talk About Grapes!

Grapes, raisins, and currants might be healthy snacks for people, but for our pets, they can be highly toxic and even life-threatening. Dogs, cats, and ferrets are all at risk of developing serious kidney damage or failure after ingesting grapes!

Here’s the important part: there’s no known “safe” amount of grapes. That means:
‼️A small dog could eat a handful and be fine, while a large dog might eat just one and suffer kidney failure.
‼️There’s no way to predict how your individual pet will react. Studies estimate 10–50% of dogs may get sick, with some developing life-threatening symptoms.

While we don’t yet know exactly why grapes are so dangerous (tartaric acid may be to blame), we do know this: if your pet eats grapes, raisins, or currants, it’s an emergency. Call your veterinarian or local ER immediately. Early treatment including induced vomiting, IV fluids, and bloodwork gives your pet the best chance at recovery.

Keep grapes, raisin cookies, trail mix, and other grape-based foods far out of reach from your pets🐶🐱 Snack safely!
