Take down your soccer nets when not in use!
Soccer nets pose a significant entanglement risk to raptors who may not register them as a hazard while hunting. Out hospital has taken in 8 soccer net entanglements in the past 2 months. 5 of these have been successfully treated for their injuries and released. The remaining 3 are still in care. Great Horned Owls are our most frequent victims of soccer net entanglements as the open fields near the nets are often home to some of the larger prey items they prefer, and the fields are less likely to be in use during their preferred hunting times.
If you have found a bird tangled in a net, contact a wildlife rehabber right away. You can cut the net from around it and then contain the bird in a box or pet carrier, but be very careful not to cut the bird or feathers. It is common for people to end up cutting a critical tendon when they think they are just cutting feathers free. This type of injury can be a death sentence. Feather damage from cutting can also effect the bird's ability to be released.
Even if the bird seems like it could fly off if freed, contain the bird and get it to a wildlife rehabber. Entanglement wounds will often worsen over the next several days and what were initially minor wounds can quickly become life threatening without treatment. A licensed rehabilitator can monitor the wounds and provide timely treatment should it become necessary.
You can help prevent entanglement injuries by taking down your nets when not in use. If you play sports at a facility that uses nets, you can help by spreading the word about the danger they pose to wildlife and ask that they facility take their nets down when not in use. Taking down nets for storage will also prolong the life of the net

Feeding wild ducks isn’t usually a good idea. Even when the food is healthy, over-feeding tends to make ducks become dependent and can cause them to over-populate bodies of water. This leads to the overgrowth of algae and the mass death of fish, and can sometimes cause ducks and geese to become aggressive toward humans.

However, if you’re going to feed ducks anyway, please feed them healthy foods. Bread causes severe gas, diarrhea, liver disease, and bone deformities. Make sure you don’t accidentally cause more harm than good! 🦆
