Pet owners, take notice! We’re looking at record high temps over the next few days, and many of our pets will be at risk of deadly heatstroke! ☀️🌡️

🐾Any dog can get heatstroke, but if any of the following factors apply to your dog, they are at higher risk:
-Overweight
-Brachycephalic (short-nosed like pugs, bulldogs)
-Long/thick fur
-Seniors or young puppies
-Large/giant breeds
-Pre-existing medical conditions (especially cardiac or respiratory problems)

Symptoms of heatstroke include: rapid breathing (hyperventilation), red gums/tongue, excessive or frothy drool, vomiting/diarrhea, tremors, loss of balance, and collapse. Pets with these signs should go to the closest ER immediately - heatstroke is FATAL if not treated. For more information, visit https://www.pieperveterinary.com/blog/preventing-heatstroke/

Please be careful this week - provide lots of shade and water, limit exercise to short outings at dawn and dusk, and DO NOT leave your dog in your car! Being informed and knowing the signs is the best way to keep your pets healthy. Stay safe! 🐶

A penguin MRI? Just another day at Pieper!

We had a very special visit from our friends at Mystic Aquarium, including Pieper Internship Program alum Dr. Laura Whalen! The Mystic team collaborated with our Neurology department including board-certified neurologist Dr. Hammond and our certified veterinary technician specialist Erin, to perform an MRI on one of their penguins.

Mystic Aquarium’s veterinary team is truly top-tier, and their dedication to providing the best care for their animals is unmatched. When they need advanced diagnostics like MRIs, we’re proud to partner with them and support their efforts.

It was an especially full-circle moment seeing Dr. Whalen back in our hospital. She was part of our 2022–2023 intern class at Pieper Memorial before heading into her current internship with Mystic Aquarium. Her passion for exotic animal medicine shone even during her time with us, and she’s preparing to start her next adventure at the Aquarium of South Carolina! We’re so proud of everything she’s accomplished and know she’ll continue to thrive.

As a teaching hospital, it’s always rewarding to help shape the future of veterinary medicine. A few of our current interns were on hand for the visit, getting hands-on experience and learning from this unique case. Moments like these are a reminder of how collaborative, specialized, and inspiring veterinary care can be.

Way to go, Dr. Whalen, and thank you again to our friends at Mystic Aquarium for trusting us with such important work!

This adorable little pup is Teddy, a 6-month old mini Poodle puppy! Teddy was playing at home and got a little too excited – during his zoomies, he fell off the couch and then refused to put weight on his back left leg. His family brought him to our ER in Middletown, where Dr. Urbonas ordered x-rays which showed that Teddy had fractured his tibia (lower leg bone) just below his knee. This type of injury (a tibial tuberosity avulsion fracture) can be common in young dogs due to the weakness of their growth plates. Teddy was transferred over to our surgery department, where board-certified specialist Dr. Mossman and surgical resident Dr. Hundal performed a procedure to repair the fracture. Teddy pulled through his surgery great, and once he finishes healing he should be back to his playful, bouncing puppy self – with quite a story to tell!

☀️🐶 The forecast is calling for a warm and sunny weekend, perfect for getting outside! But if you’re heading out and about, please leave your pets at home rather than risk leaving them alone in the car.

Even on an 85°F day, the inside of your car can hit over 100°F in just 10 minutes - and cracking the windows or parking in the shade isn’t enough. Dogs and cats can’t sweat like we do, making them more prone to dangerous heatstroke, especially if they have thick coats, flat faces, or are overweight.

We know it seems like common sense, but overheating can and does kill pets – sadly, we see it every summer. Accidents can happen to anyone, so please plan ahead and don’t take the risk. Let’s make sure everyone enjoys the summer safely! 💛

Ducky is a little dog who’s recovering from a big surgery! She’s a 4-year old Chihuahua mix, and recently her family noticed that she was acting painful– she was sore, eating less than normal, and reluctant to use stairs or walk. They took her to Pieper Memorial in Middletown to see Dr. Perkins, one of our board-certified neurologists, who identified that Ducky’s pain was coming from her lower back. After an MRI confirmed that she had a herniated disc in her spine which was causing painful pressure, Ducky underwent surgery with Dr. Perkins to remove the excess disc. She just had her first recheck after surgery and she is feeling much better!

Ducky’s herniated disc was caused by a condition called Intervertebral Disc Disease, or IVDD, which means one of the soft cushioning discs in her spine had bulged outward and was pressing into her spinal cord. It’s a very painful condition, and in severe cases can even cause paralysis! While some mild cases of IVDD can heal with rest, more serious cases like Ducky’s require surgery to fix the discs. IVDD is one of the most common conditions our neurologists treat, especially in breeds like Dachshunds and French Bulldogs. Keeping your pups at a healthy weight and watching for any signs of discomfort are key to preventing injury!

🐦 It’s baby bird season in Connecticut!
We often get calls from kindhearted people who find young birds and want to help. Here’s what to do:

• Fledglings (feathered & upright): These babies are learning to fly and will spend a few days on the ground while their parents watch nearby. Give them space - they’re doing just fine!

• Nestlings (no feathers): If you see a nest, gently place them back in. 🐣 It’s a MYTH that bird parents will abandon babies if touched by humans!

• Injured, sick, or orphaned birds: Use https://ahnow.org or the Animal Help Now app to find a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
⚠️ Remember: It’s illegal for anyone without a license to care for wild native animals.

Let’s all work together to protect our local wildlife 💚
