Happy Fourth of July!! Enjoy safely, compassionately and considerately. Yes, my dogs will be shaking in their boots and my cats will be hiding if/when it gets loud. The clinic will be open today, Thursday, till 6 p.m. but will be closed Friday-Saturday-Sunday so if you need anything to help your pets stay calm, get it today! Failing that here are some things you can try: Close up your house, turn the AC on, and play some music. Ideally music such as rock with a strong steady base beat. The heart can't help but try and regulate to that beat, and a slower heart rate is calming (believe it or not, classical music doesn't cut it! Violins sound too much like whines!). Also, if your dog wants to hide somewhere, LET THEM. Basement, closet, bathroom - wherever they can get the most comfort is fine. Finally BE SURE DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE CLOSED! Put the pets in a safe place if you are going to have a house full of people going in and out. Somebody's terrified pet always escapes at this time and it's heartbreaking. Now let's talk drugs: For dogs you can try Benadryl - the classic pink and white capsules, 25 mg. strength: one capsule per 25 lbs body weight every 12 hours (so, yes, a 100 lb dog can have four every 12 hours). If you have Trazodone - a 50-lb dog can have about 150 to 200 mg. every 12-24 hours. So, a 25 lb. dog gets half that, a 100 lb dog gets double. (I do the math - approximately - so you don't have to! Be sure to check what mg. strength the medication is!!!!). If you have Gabapentin a 50 lb dog can have 300-600 mg every 12-24 hours. So, a 25 lb dog can have 150-300 mg, and a 100 lb dog can have twice the 50 lb dog dose. That said, I hope your pets don't need any of it! Enjoy! XOXO - Doc Steph P.S. If you're going to start medication it's best if you give it an hour or two BEFORE things get loud!
