Middletown, CT Dog Park News and updates for the Middletown, CT Dog Park

🚨📢🚨📢🚨📢🚨📢🚨📢🚨📢🚨📢🚨

Here is a long awaited update on the dog park. It’s a long read, but worth it, and we need your help!

In Fall of 2024 we did some site visits to the two most viable sites: Long Lane soccer fields and Zoars pond. It was found that Zoars would be the better option especially for liability of sharing a parcel.

The public works committee decided that the city couldn’t fund such a project. This was never what we asked for. We simply needed authorization to use the parcel from the city to seek funds from grants and fundraising. The chair of the public works committee, who is also the president of common counsel did his due diligence and met with one of the city of Middletown’s counsel and acting public works director as to how to to move forward. It was unanimously decided and agreed that if a 501(c)(3) was put together, a lease would be formulated to explore a dog park through proper channels (wetlands, P&Z, etc)

Here’s where we need your help. The mayors office is now stating that we did not follow the proper processes and the authorization was not allowed to be given. They also will not move forward with proper authorization nor even take a meeting to discuss, which speaks to how much they continue to ignore taxpayers. So even though we had all of these city employees that were well aware of what we were doing for these last couple years, now all of a sudden it wasn’t being done right? This is a personal attack, and we will not stand for it. We would need you to continue to email the following email addresses and support of the dog park until we are heard loud and clear!! we appreciate your continued support to get this into fruition.

Serious consideration is being given to 17.5 acres at Zoar’s Pond, and about 6.5 acres at the Long Hill soccer complex.

2/14/24 Public Works commission meeting results:

Assistant director Weissberg gave an outstanding presentation detailing the working group process and being transparent about everything we’ve gone through to get here. The Commission is very interested in hearing more information and visiting the proposed sites. With the elections we just had we have had a transfer of roles and some hearing about this for the first time. We are happy to work with the town and make sure every concern is addressed to continue to finalize this and make this a reality, finally!!

We have been working diligently (and silently - sorry about that) behind the scenes to make this dog park a reality finally for Middletown. The process will make its first stop at the Public Works meeting tomorrow for approval. We need you, yes YOU, to show your support at the meeting under public comment. Agenda is below along with log in information.

Great progress at the PW meeting this evening! Members of the committee have recognized we need to make forward progress on this initiative. They have voted to form a subcommittee that will focus solely on the dog park to begin next year. Very exciting news for us!

We made the paper!!

Please note that we do not support Marszalek Park as being the location for the official park. It’s much too small for a proper set up, there is no room for parking, there is a loud train that runs through, there is a furniture factory next door that emits dangerous fumes and the homeless frequent there at the city’s knowledge just to name some issues. Additionally, we do not support any cutting down of trees to potentially make the open area bigger as the parcel itself is very large.

We will continue to work to make a dog park that is safe and enjoyable and not just have a park for a sake of saying we have a dog park. 🐾

“With a city as large as ours, it seems silly to not have one yet,” said a resident...

Public Works meeting update:

The commission is very supportive of the Initiative. There are discrepancies between location and timeline. We are working to advocate for the safest park coming as soon as we can!!
