Yesterday's trivia was a tough one, but we hope you had fun guessing! The correct fact was: B, Platypus and Echidna

The amazing fact is that the platypus and echidna, known as monotremes, are not exceptions but represent a very ancient branch of the mammal family tree, and they retain a mix of reptilian and mammalian traits. They are considered living fossils because their egg-laying is a retained characteristic from early mammals, before live birth became the norm. This makes them a crucial link for understanding the evolution of mammals.

Ancient lineage: Monotremes diverged from other mammals over 110 million years ago, well before marsupials and placental mammals became dominant. Their reproductive strategy is a legacy from the earliest mammals.

Reptilian and mammalian traits: They combine traits from both groups.

Reptilian: They lay soft, leathery eggs and have a single opening for waste and reproduction (a cloaca), which they share with birds and reptiles.

Mammalian: They are warm-blooded, have hair, and the females produce milk to feed their young.

Unique milk delivery: Since they lack ni***es, the mother secretes milk through pores in her skin, and the babies (called puggles) lap it up from her fur, often while in a pouch.

Evolutionary importance: Because they are the only living egg-laying mammals, they provide invaluable insights into the evolution of mammals as a whole. Their existence helps scientists understand how the very first mammals lived and evolved from an egg-laying ancestor.
