Keep your pets' teeth shining in between dental cleanings!
Gold Standard: Using an enzymatic pet toothpaste with a soft bristled toothbrush (toddler toothbrush) - brushing teeth daily is the very best way to slow down tartar and calculous accumulation
Other Options: Dental diets, dental treats and water additives

Quick tip: look for the "VOHC" logo on the products packaging. VOHC stands for Veterinary Oral Health Council - they put their stamp of approval on the best and most effective products for oral health.

Today in the Cooperation Corner - place! Teaching a "place" command can be a great tool for managing behavior at home. Having a set safe space to go to when guests come in can help with door-dashing, over-excitement, resource guarding behaviors, and help with impulse control. Use a release command (break, free, ok, etc) to let them know when they can leave. Once they know the command at home, you can transfer that to other places, making getting on the scale at the vet much easier!

August is Clear the Shelters Month!

This month we want to showcase Addie! He is our foster kitty from the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. He is roughly 2 years old, fully vaccinated and FeLV/FIV negative. He is a very sweet boy with a lot of playful energy. Give us a call at the clinic for a meet and greet!

When looking for a new furry friend to add to the family, be sure to check out your local humane societies and rescues. There are a lot of dogs, cats, small animals, birds and reptiles that need loving homes.

Celebrating all friendships today, including the ones you'd least expect!

In the photo are a couple of yeast "buddies" from an ear cytology here in clinic. In the summertime we can see an increase of ear infections and yeast can be one of the culprits, as well as bacteria. If you notice your pet shaking/scratching their ears, any discharge, odor or redness, that may be a sign your pet has an infection.

Some tips to avoid an ear infection:
-Avoid water in the ears - make sure to cover or clean/dry out well with a cotton ball
-Excessive hair in the ear canals can trap moisture and create a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria (looking at you, poodle breeds!) - check with groomer about cutting back or plucking hair from ears
-Sometimes becomes a secondary infection from allergies, keeping control on general allergies
-For floppy ears or pets with waxy discharge that always seem to return, long-term weekly or bi-weekly ear cleaning with an ear flush with a drying component - call the clinic if you're interested in picking up a bottle
