The Sussex Spaniel 🐶
Low to the ground. Long ears. A rich golden-liver coat that turns heads wherever they go. The Sussex Spaniel is a charming and somewhat rare sporting breed known for its calm demeanor, loyalty, and distinctive voice in the field.
A Distinctive English Sporting Dog
The Sussex Spaniel originated in Sussex, England in the late 18th century. Developed specifically for hunting in dense undergrowth, these dogs were bred to move methodically through thick cover while flushing game birds for hunters.
Unlike many faster sporting dogs, the Sussex Spaniel works at a steady, deliberate pace — carefully searching and using their excellent nose to locate birds.
💖 Personality
Sussex Spaniels are affectionate, gentle, and deeply devoted to their families. They are known for their calm and steady temperament, making them wonderful companions in the home.
While they enjoy outdoor activity and play, they are often more relaxed indoors compared to many other sporting breeds. They form strong bonds with their people and enjoy being included in family life.
Sussex Spaniels can also be surprisingly vocal. In the field, they were known for their distinctive baying — a trait that occasionally carries over into home life when they want to make their opinions known.
🩺 Health Considerations
Sussex Spaniels are generally healthy but may be predisposed to:
• Hip dysplasia
• Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
• Heart conditions
• Ear infections (due to their long ears)
Routine veterinary exams, joint monitoring, and regular ear care help support long-term health.
🧽 Grooming Needs
Their beautiful, dense coat requires regular brushing to prevent tangles and maintain its rich color and texture. Feathering around the ears, legs, and chest benefits from consistent grooming.
Because of their long, floppy ears, routine ear cleaning is particularly important to prevent moisture buildup and infections.

Announcing Plans for the First Sussex Spaniel Rescue Parade!!


We are planning a Rescue Parade for Sussex Spaniels!! The Heart of Ohio Sussex Spaniel Club (HOSSC) will be holding its annual regional specialty show in conjunction with the Sussex Spaniel Club of America’s national specialty show, which will be held at Purina Farms September 19 -21, 2025. The HOSSC specialty show will be held on Saturday, September 20th, and we are in the early planning stages for hosting a Sussex Spaniel Rescue Parade that day!!


The Sussex Spaniel Rescue Parade will provide an opportunity for rescue dogs and their owners to be formally celebrated and honored! Each dog and their handler will have the opportunity to make a “victory lap” around the show ring while an announcer delivers a brief biography/tells the audience a little bit about the dog! Participating dogs should be comfortable in a crowded/noisy setting. We all understand that some rescue dogs may be fearful in this setting, so it would be best in this case for them not to participate… we don’t want any dogs to be unnecessarily stressed. However, for those dogs that are not shy or fearful, we highly encourage you to bring them out to enjoy the fun!

It will be a jam-packed weekend as there will be all-breed shows going on at the same time as well as very large entries of Sussex Spaniels at all of the shows throughout the weekend. There will also be a variety of hospitality/special events sponsored by the Sussex Spaniel clubs.

At this time, we are seeking to determine interest in participating in the Sussex Spaniel Rescue Parade. We need to get an approximate headcount of participating dog and handler teams so that we can plan accordingly. Purina Farms is located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. Here is another Rescue Sussex Spaniel Story, A loving, caring, patient home can turn a life around. Raffi has found that fast cat is a great sport for him, with his AKC PAL number he can get fancy ribbons and another bonding active with "his person" & new friends. The holiday card exchange is an unofficial event organized strictly for fun. Past participation has typically been 30-35 households and there is still plenty of room to join in.

Sign up NOW by sending your name and mailing address to email [email protected] by deadline Sunday November 17, 11:59 PM. The final 2024 mailing list will be sent to all participants a day or two later.
