It’s not realistic to be perfect and to hold a high standard that I will never yell as a parent. It is more realistic to believe that I can move through the setbacks faster. Each time I make a new choice I feel less shame and guilt. I get stronger and realize that I can shift faster to happiness and peace.

I love spending time doing fun things with my daughter. As you can see, recently we did a bit of redecorating....

As a parent, I've learned that setbacks are challenges to work through to get where you want to end up.

As a dog parent, you will have setbacks, too. 🐶

Every day is a learning opportunity for your dog!

But pushing and pressuring doesn’t create success. It creates burn out. You need to take breaks during the week and during the actual training sessions. You can train for a few minutes and then take a break for a few minutes. Repeat this so that you have frequent breaks within your training sessions.

Mixing it up with training in different environments can help, too.

Shelby called us because she was feeling stressed that her dog, Duckie, wasn't listening at all.

Duckie was peeing all over the house, jumping, not settling, and pulling on the leash. Shelby didn't have any control over Duckie's behavior.

She decided to invest in five private dog training sessions with us.

By the end of those sessions, Duckie went to having no accidents in the house, learned to sit and stay on command, and became a great leash walker.

What a great day to work on learning Leash Walking at the park!

Find a low distraction area when you start training this. Parking lots and parks are great. Once your dog starts to calm down you can progress toward the walking trail or a more distracting area.

This method is simple and unique. Start your walk by walking in a large circle with your dog on the outside of the circle.

You will be taking a small number of steps and your dog will be taking a large number of steps. This is perfect because your dog probably wants to walk fast and has a ton of energy to release.

When your dog isn’t pulling you hard, walk forward.

Every time, your dog pulls too hard on the leash, walk in a circle until your dog stops pulling hard.

Once that happens proceed forward.

Because your dog is used to pulling, you need to be consistent for this method to work.

With consistency, your dog will start looking toward you instead of pulling.

Don’t be concerned about a perfectly loose leash. You just want your dog to stop dragging you.

Repeat as often as needed, and be patient. Soon you’ll easily be walking together.

Happy Fall Equinox!

This is a great time of year to find balance in your life with your dog.

"I am older and have an energetic beagle mix, very loving but out of control to the point I was contemplating returning her. Now that isn't necessary as she can sit and allow me to clip her lead and wait until it’s safe to go out! She also is excellent at coming quickly to the “HERE” command which is safer for her. When I was in 4th grade, my best friend was in 4-H and showed her horses. I imagined myself on stage training my dog, Heather. I wanted to be a famous performer with animals that I trained.

I saw the excitement of the audience clapping as they admired the tricks. I decided to join a dog 4-H Club. I loved it and trained my dog often.

When we met each week to practice our training skills with the club, Heather did great and listened well to me. I loved training my dog!

My 4-H advisor used the traditional punishment based methods to train and that is what I learned. Over time, I stopped enjoying myself.

Once I learned about reward-based dog training, I enjoyed training again. And found that it worked so much better for both my dog and I. 🐶😆

Wayne and Jodi called me about their two beautiful German Shepherds, Isabella and Zoltar. They could not get their dogs to listen to them, and they would not respond to the “Come” command.

We worked hard on getting these dogs to listen well. First, we focused on having them learn to stay on command (which both dogs’ grasped very quickly). From there we taught them to Come at a distance.

By the last training session, Isabella and Zoltar were listening and had learned to stay. In addition, the owners could walk about 30 ft away and call both of their dogs with a “Come” command. And they came!

Your dog needs to know that he doesn’t have to be perfect.

Mistakes are normal. Sometimes your dog will follow his/her old habit, or do the complete opposite behavior from what you are training your dog to do. Your dog may also be reactive at times. This is all normal.

What if you could embrace the set back and realize it is a catalyst in helping you move forward? What if the set back isn’t really a set back at all but actually part of the progress to success?

Let’s help you find the perfect dog training treats!

You want something that’s:
* Small enough for frequent rewards: Avoid giving your dog training treats that are too big, which can slow down training and potentially lead to weight gain.
* Healthy: Look for treats made with natural ingredients and free from fillers and artificial additives.
* Delicious: Of course, your dog needs to enjoy the taste!

Additional Tips:
* Use a treat pouch: This will keep the treats handy during training sessions.
* Be consistent: Reward your dog with a treat only when they perform the desired behavior.
* Gradually decrease the treat size: As your dog learns the command, you can start giving them treats less often. Go to a random reward schedule.

By following these tips and using healthy training treats, you can effectively train your dog while keeping their health in mind.
