It's been a long week. And it has taken every bit of that week to put words together. And it's still very, very difficult.
For Deuce: The Gift of the Last Years
At Mar~Li Equestrian, we believe that every horse deserves a life filled with meaning, respect, and love—especially in their later years. Saying goodbye, especially when it seems too soon, is the hard part of providing "Assisted Living for Your Equine Family."
Deuce came to us at 18 years old, wise, seasoned, and full of character. For three years, he was quite the presence in our barn family—a soul who demanded some of the spotlight and captured all of our hearts. At 21, he passed on, leaving a space far larger than his stall.
He bonded deeply with two of our own—Baffling and Cisco, and before Cisco, Junior — forming a trio that spoke in soft whickers, quiet nudges, playful banter, mutual grooming, and sunbathing under Baffling's watchful eye in turnout. Those friendships were more than sweet; they were grounding, gentle connections that seemed to say, “We are home, we are safe, we are family.”
Deuce’s gift was in the small moments. He learned to give kisses at the gate—his own little ritual, waiting patiently and pressing his nose forward as if to say, “I see you (and I know you have treats.)” It was always tender, never demanding, and always exactly what we didn’t know we needed that day.
He asked for little (except at mealtime ☺️) and gave so much. To care for a horse like Deuce in his final years was an honor. It meant keeping him comfortable and happy, watching his eyes soften in the morning light, resting his head on your shoulder. It meant loving him not because he could still win ribbons or carry his beloved rider, but because he was simply Deuce. The Deuce of Diamonds.
Providing the “best last years” doesn’t mean erasing time. It means embracing it—slowly, lovingly, intentionally. We wrapped him in all the care, companionship, and dignity he deserved. And he gave it all back tenfold. Even as I held his head in my lap and comforted him in those last moments, his kindness and gentle spirit shined through. He was truly a kind soul on this Earth.
To his human family: We send our deepest love and gratitude. Thank you for trusting us with him. He was cherished—truly.
To our barn family: You showed up for him every day, and he felt it. Whether it was cleaning his stall just a little more carefully, or stopping for just a moment longer at his stall to give hugs and scratches—he noticed. We noticed. Thank you.
Deuce will always be part of Mar~Li Equestrian. In the way we speak more gently. In the way Baffling and Cisco still call for him. In the way a horse can still make us pause, soften, and feel.
Rest easy, Deuce. You were deeply loved.
