Today we had a Veterinary Science clinic. Rachel, professional vet tech, offered hand-outs and hands-on learning about evaluating vitals and clarity to vaccine schedules (as we ready for spring!).

I recommend every barn and/ or lesson program incorporate a clinic like this! It builds real horsemanship skills. We will do another one soon and if you’re interested, know interested students, or want to have a clinic at your barn I can help connect you.

Lots of us talk about “when we were young riders…” and how different today’s riders are coming along. I agree, many true horsemanship skills are long gone and the future is in trouble. As we know, too many kids aren’t “made to carry their saddles.”

But in my barn I have two amazing young riders worth recognizing and appreciating. They give me huge hope and I very much believe the experiences here - for them and for everyone I ever worked with as an instructor or mentor (mostly with Prince as the steward) - will help them shine as horse people for decades to come.

These two, Hailey and Hannah, after all the work was done of stalls, etc. knew ponies needed exercise. New England December cold, rain and wet … and way past dusk did not deter them. No indoor here and certainly no arena lighting. This is hardcore horse land 😉…. But yet, with the girls at the helm, 3 year old Bond in a halter and ba****ck and 16 year old Arrow in a rope halter and ba****ck took to a hack.

Not only that, but a hand walk for 28 year old Prince and 11 year old Mufassa along our trail was also included.

These are the kind of riders that were made to carry their saddles ❤️ when they were young. They were trained “right” by other, great instructors in their earlier years. It doesn’t hurt they have welsh cobs and ponies to play with — the kind of ponies who can do this!!

(Ps I was inside sipping tea on a zoom call… too cold for me!)

Three Saintly Ponies here, over the past few weeks:
👑👑Prince Charming, age 28 who thought he was retired and now finds he isn't, ponying his least favorite barn mate (Bond), during the his least favorite time of day (dusk), in his least favorite place (the woods), in order to give him some exercise a few days ago while Hailey maintained her No Stirrups November and a bit-less bridle. Definitely Pony Saint Status.
🪽🪽 Bond, today's first ride in probably two weeks, at 3 years of age, in 37 degrees, in a halter and lead rope...with Hannah! She also took him on a mini-trail ride with Prince and Hailey. And let me add... I was not there - these girls (and ponies) are phenomenal.
👠👠Arrow, yesterday, allowing Hailey and me to further our trimming/ shoeing knowledge with Matt Burbank. Very patient pony and maybe a very patient farrier.🙄 I finally have found my calling. Kidding, but not really. Obsessed with hoof science.
