Oh sweet Bear🐻 pictured here while he was hospitalized with us. His family brought him immediatley seeking urgent care after a close encounter with a cane toad. Bear is slowly recuperating at home with the love and care of his amazing family❤️.
🐸Toads secrete potent bufotoxins from glands behind their eyes and across their skin, which are rapidly absorbed through mucous membranes—especially in the mouth, gums, or eyes
🚨Symptoms of Toad Poisoning in Pets:
- Immediate signs (seconds to minutes): drooling, foaming at the mouth, pawing at the face, head shaking, vomiting, red gums
- Progressive symptoms: disorientation, tremors, seizures, irregular heart rate, difficulty breathing, collapse, even death—sometimes within 15 minutes for highly potent toads.
3️⃣Things To Do if Your Pet Encounters a Toad:
1. Rinse the mouth immediately — use water to flush the mouth from back to front for at least 5 minutes, with the head tilted downward to prevent swallowing toxins.
2. Rinse the face and eyes if there’s contact—these toxins can also irritate mucous membranes.
3. Seek veterinary care immediately—even if symptoms appear mild at first, they can escalate rapidly
Encounters with toxic cane toads are a serious risk for our pets. Even a quick lick or mouthing can cause life-threatening symptoms. Avoid surprises—keep a vigilant eye on your pets and act fast if they have contact with a toad.
