I slowed my car down last week because I couldn't look away.
A walker was moving with three small dogs behind him down a sidewalk. Two were keeping pace. But the third dog was at the end of a tight leash, his body pressed as low as he could get it. Ears flat. Tail tucked. Whites of his eyes showing. Every few steps he got je**ed forward, scrambling to catch up.
That dog wasn't on a walk. That dog was being dragged through something that terrified him.
And the worst part? To most people passing by, it probably looked completely normal.
Here's what the science actually tells us: a 20-minute sniff walk, where your dog leads the pace and gets to investigate whatever they want, can be more mentally fulfilling than an hour of power walking. Sniffing reduces cortisol, lowers arousal, and gives dogs something a brisk leash walk never can: the chance to just be a dog.
