Oppositional reflex in training, let’s talk about it!

Oppositional reflex is gold in dog training—especially for teaching a dog to hold a position—because it taps into a natural, automatic response instead of fighting it

What oppositional reflex actually is…It’s the instinctive tendency for a dog to push against pressure rather than give to it.

Why it’s great for teaching position duration

1. It creates self-maintained stability
When a dog feels light, consistent pressure (leash, body pressure, spatial pressure), their reflex kicks in and they actively hold the position themselves.

They aren’t waiting for a command—they’re bracing.
That’s huge for:
Place
Sit/stay
Down/stay
Heel position

The dog isn’t frozen by fear or micromanaged—they’re balanced and engaged.

2. It reduces anticipation and creeping

Without oppositional reflex, dogs often:
Inch forward
Pop up early

Break position when pressure disappears

With it, they learn:
“Pressure = hold steady.”

3. It builds clarity without conflict

Instead of nagging commands (“stay… stay… STAY”), you’re communicating through clear physical information:

Pressure = don’t move
Release = success

The key rule: pressure must be light and consistent

Oppositional reflex works when:
Pressure is predictable
The dog can succeed
Release is clear and immediate

Too much pressure = shutdown or avoidance
Too little clarity = confusion

Socializing = Exposure. Say it with me.

Socializing does not mean letting your dog say hi to everyone and every dog it meets. It means properly exposing them to the outside world and learning to be neutral amongst the distractions they will see.

Here’s Nyx, a 5 months old Corso puppy doing some training out in the world to gain exposure and confidence in new environments. Setting her up for success learning she does NOT have to greet everyone and what we actually want is for her to be okay in her surroundings & ignore the distractions.

Anyone else struggling with puppy biting ? Although completely normal here are some of the main reasons for biting, and tips on how to curve that behavior!

1. They Explore With Their Mouth
Puppies don’t have hands — everything is investigated with their teeth.

2. Teething (3–6 months)
Their gums itch, teeth are erupting, and pressure feels good.
Biting relieves discomfort.

3. Play Drive & Prey Instinct
Movement triggers instinct:
Fast hands
Running kids
Flapping clothing
All look like “prey” to a puppy brain.

4. Poor Bite Inhibition
They haven’t learned how hard is “too hard” yet.
They need guidance to learn pressure control.

5. Overtired / Overstimulated
Just like toddlers — tired puppies get mouthy and wild.

How to Curb Puppy Biting (The Right Way)

1. Always Redirect — Never Wrestle
Hands are NOT toys.
The second teeth touch skin:
Calmly freeze
Say “uh uh”
Replace your hand with a chew toy
This teaches:
“Teeth belong on toys, not people.”

2. Enforced Nap Schedule (This is HUGE)
Most “biting problems” are actually exhaustion problems.
Rule of thumb:
1 hour awake → 2 hours crate nap
A rested puppy is a polite puppy.

3. Teach Bite Pressure
If the bite is too hard:
Say “ouch”
Immediately disengage and step away
This mimics littermate feedback.

4. Daily Chew Therapy
Give outlets that satisfy jaw drive:
Frozen Kongs
Beef cheek rolls
Bully sticks
Frozen carrots / cucumbers
Chewing literally calms the nervous system.

5. Build Impulse Control Early
Short daily sessions:
Sit to greet
Wait before food
Place / settle
Leave-it games
Impulse control = calm mouths.

6. Avoid Accidental Reinforcement
Laughing, squealing, or jerking hands excites prey drive and makes biting worse.
Calm = control

Age What to Expect
8–12 weeks Normal needle bites
3–5 months Peak teething & chaos
6+ months Dramatic improvement if shaped right

Sophie’s engagement in public was 👌🤩

How did we achieve this? By PAYING any and all engagement she offers me. She now knows that the only way she gets the good stuff is by offering me her attention over everything else.

She’s definitely a quick learner and I can’t wait to see her progress by the end of the program!

Sophie is 5 days in and rocking her program!

She’s quickly caught on that offering me the engagement and not the distractions, is what gets her paid👏🏻
