I am often asked about service dog training, so I want to take 2 minutes to explain the stages of Service Dog Training.
1. Potty Training: This is the first step, and all dogs should be fully potty trained by 6 months of age. If your dog still has accidents, it means it still needs time, and this must be your focus!
2. Obedience training can happen while potty training is taking place. Obedience training means that your dog makes eye contact, focuses, listens, and obeys your commands consistently without the need to repeat them. It means your dog displays obedience in different settings and environments.
3. Public Access training means ensuring your dog is well socialized with other people, dogs, sounds, smells, and public settings to the point they do not care. It also involves ensuring your dog behaves appropriately in different settings. If your dog lacks obedience training, he will fail in this stage.
4. Task Training is when your dog initiates advanced training to perform service tasks to help with the owner’s disabilities. Why is this the last step? To execute task training, the dog must be mature, well-socialized, and obedient to succeed.
