Hey y’all, it’s Karol. 💚

It’s taken me some time to gather my thoughts and find the words to post about what happened to this baby earlier this week. It’s heartbreaking, and it has taken an emotional toll on many of us within the rescue community. 💔

So many people were working together to get her to safety. Volunteers were out searching, people were driving around, sharing her information, asking for updates, and staying in contact. Everyone was hoping someone would find her in time. Despite all those efforts, we couldn’t reach her before it was too late.

What makes this even harder is that this isn’t the first goat our rescue community has come across under disturbing circumstances. Our network, which focuses largely on farm animals, has encountered other cases involving suspected animal sacrifice in Homestead, including goats found behind train tracks. Sadly, our community has been dealing with these situations repeatedly.

For some people, this may be the first time they’re hearing about something like this. For those who have been trying to help these animals, it’s another heartbreaking loss.

I’m glad this is getting attention. I’m glad the mayors are bringing awareness to it and that police have announced an investigation. We need that concern to continue beyond this one case, with answers, accountability, and efforts to prevent more animals from suffering.

Thank you to Anabella, the volunteers who went out searching for her, and our team who stayed connected, concerned, and ready to help. Thank you to the sanctuaries in our network that were willing to welcome her and provide her with a safe home. So many people wanted her to have a different ending.

This isn’t an easy post to write. She deserved safety, care, and a chance to live. Her life mattered. 💔💚

🦆 MUSCOVY MONDAY: What is angel wing?

Have you ever noticed a Muscovy whose wing feathers stick out to the side instead of resting flat against their body?

This is a condition commonly known as angel wing. 🪽

Angel wing is a developmental wing deformity seen in waterfowl, including Muscovies. As a young duck grows, the outer portion of the wing twists outward rather than resting in its normal position against the body. This gives the wing its recognizable “sticking out” appearance.

So, what causes it?

The answer is actually more complicated than you might thinkNutrition can play a role, particularly during the period when a young duck is growing very quickly. An unbalanced diet, rapid growth, and other nutritional factors have all been associated with the development of angel wing.

But diet isn’t the whole story.

Genetics can play a role too.🧬

Research suggests that there can be a hereditary component to angel wing, and the condition has been specifically documented in Muscovy ducks. Other factors may contribute as well, which is why there isn’t always one simple explanation for why an individual duck develops it.

Timing is also important.

When angel wing is first beginning to develop in a young, growing duckling, there can sometimes be a small window when the wing can be supported or wrapped into the correct position as it continues growing. Once the wing has finished developing and angel wing is fully established, however, it generally cannot be corrected.

Thankfully, angel wing itself is not painful. ❤️

It can affect a Muscovy’s ability to fly, and the feathers that stick outward may occasionally catch on things. Some ducks may also be treated differently by other members of their flock because they look different.

But many Muscovies with angel wing adapt incredibly well and can live perfectly happy lives. 🦆❤️

Every unusual-looking wing has a story, and sometimes learning what we’re seeing is the first step toward understanding these incredible ducks a little better.

Happy National Cat Day from FARA! 🐱💚

Today, we celebrate the cats we love and the community of people who have helped give them care, safety, and a chance at a better life.

💚 An especially big shoutout to everyone who has fostered for us through the Miramar Cat Project! You opened your homes, made room in your lives, and gave your time to cats who needed somewhere safe. From helping them recover after medical care to patiently earning their trust, your kindness made so much possible. We’re deeply grateful for every one of you.

💚🐷 Let’s come together for Mandy and Piggy Protective Services.

Last week, Mandy shared that she was furloughed from the main job that helps her support over 50 pigs at her sanctuary. She has worked so hard to provide for them, putting much of her own paychecks toward their daily needs. Now, she needs our help.

As one of FARA’s sanctuary network partners, Mandy has stepped up for animals from many difficult cases. She welcomed Hollywood and elderly Oreo, both of whom faced cancer. She took in Star and her piglets from the Plantation case so their family could stay together. She has also welcomed pigs from the St. Cloud case, a surrendered dog, and animals with neurological challenges who need extra care and patience.

We’ve seen her commitment firsthand, and we’re grateful for the lives she has helped change.

Supporting our sanctuary partners is part of FARA’s mission. Their work continues long after a rescue or transport ends. Every day brings meals, cleaning, shelter upkeep, medical needs, and hands-on care. We need one another to keep that work going.

🐷💚 WILLIAM, WISPY & WATSON ARE OFFICIALLY NEUTERED! 🐷🐷🐷

A little overdue update on the three St. Cloud boys! 💚

This past Monday, William, Wispy, and Watson underwent their neuter procedures at lantanaanimalhospital, and we’re happy to share that all three surgeries were completed successfully! The boys are now healing and recovering. 🐷💚

Watson required a more complicated procedure because he was cryptorchid, meaning one of his testicles had not descended and needed to be surgically removed through an abdominal incision.

Thankfully, his immediate recovery from surgery was uneventful!

🙏 A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE!

These boys are part of the larger St. Cloud pig case involving 38 pigs, and their journey is another reminder of why our sanctuary network matters.

One sanctuary rescued them, another opened its doors, a veterinary team provided their care, and FARA worked alongside everyone to help raise the funds needed.

No one organization can do it all, but together, we can make a difference! 💚

Now it’s time for these three little boys to rest, heal, and enjoy the love they deserve!

💚 MONDAY SHOUTOUT TO MANGO BISTRO! 💚

We want to start the week by giving a HUGE thank-you to Mango Bistro in Englewood, Florida, for helping us with lunch for the volunteers at Fandango Sanctuary this past weekend! 🐷🌿

We reached out at the last minute, and their team was so gracious and kind. The food was absolutely amazing, and the place itself is just as wonderful! 🥭💚

Volunteers give their time and energy to help sanctuaries and the animals who call them home, and having a delicious lunch to enjoy together made the day even more special.

To everyone at Mango Bistro, thank you for taking care of us and for being so amazing! We appreciate you more than you know. 💚
