Did you know more than 50% of dogs and cats that are pets in the United States are considered overweight or obese?⠀

Obesity in pets is a big deal because it can lead to a multitude of health issues.⠀

Let’s make a new year’s resolution for our pets too! ⠀
Below are some tips on what to do with your overweight pet. ⠀

• Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian - Having a vet examine your pet should be the first step if you are concerned about your pet’s weight. This way you can find out the cause of weight gain before trying to shed those pounds. Your vet can also help you create a diet plan that works best for your companion. ⠀

• Diet - Obviously for most overweight pets, diet factors a huge role. It is important to check the calorie content of the food you are feeding, as well as the treats your pet is getting. You’d be surprised how many calories pet treats (even dental treats) can add. Discuss with your veterinarian on how much you should be feeding your pet.⠀

• Exercise - Just like with people, exercise plays a big role in weight management for our furry companions. Even taking your dog on daily short walks or spending extra time letting your cat chase the laser can make a difference. If you struggle getting your pet to want to exercise, trying finding a toy that makes him work for his food - like a food dispensing ball, slow feeder, or puzzle.
• Weight checks - Checking your pet’s weight regularly can help you know if he is eating too much, or even losing weight too quickly. If you can’t weigh at home, speak with your veterinarian about doing monthly drop-ins for weight checks.

As always to staff at Methuen Veterinary Hospital are the BEST. My dog had a seizure (we think) today and I jumped in the car and drove right there. Paige met us outside and took him right in and took great care of him. ❤️ you guys!
