The 4th of July is fast approaching. If your pets do not react well to loud noises like fireworks, here are some tips to help your pet deal with anxiety. Make sure your pets have identification tags or microchips, and also have a current picture of your pet. This can greatly improve your chances of getting your pet back should they bolt because of the loud noises. Consider signing your pet up for behavioral therapy to desensitize your pet and reduce the risk of problems. Speak to your veterinarian about calming medication and get it weeks in advance so you can test it and make sure the medication and dosing are working for your pet. Have a safe and secure environment for your pet. Consider putting them in an escape-proof room or crate during parties, fireworks, or thunderstorms. If possible, choose a room without windows. You might even try playing soft music or white noise to help mask the sound. Sometimes distracting your pet helps; engage them with their favorite toys or activities. Puzzle toys filled with treats can be particularly effective in keeping their minds occupied. Exercise your pet during the day to help them relax more easily before the event. You need to remain calm and relaxed, as pets pick up on our anxieties.
