These little fish may look harmless right now... but give them some time and they'll become absolute freshwater predators πŸ”₯🐟

These juvenile Kelberi Peacock Bass are only a couple inches long today, but they can grow to 12–18 inches in captivity and become the centerpiece of a monster freshwater aquarium.

With their fast growth, aggressive feeding habits, and stunning gold coloration as adults, it's easy to see why they're one of the most sought after predator fish in the hobby.

Just remember... if it fits in their mouth, it's probably on the menu.

If you're building a predator tank or looking for something truly unique, come check out our selection at Aquarium Arts in Mesa, Arizona.

A cleanup crew can be one of the best investments in your reef tank... or one of the fastest ways to waste money if you make these mistakes πŸŒπŸ¦€

❌ Adding too many cleanup crew members too early
If your tank is brand new and doesn't have enough algae or leftover food, they can starve before the aquarium matures.

❌ Forgetting about predators
Triggers, puffers, large wrasses, and other aggressive fish may see your cleanup crew as an expensive snack.

❌ Skipping drip acclimation
Many invertebrates are extremely sensitive to changes in salinity and water chemistry. Proper acclimation can make all the difference.

The best cleanup crew is one that's added gradually and matched to the needs of your aquarium.

πŸ”₯ Aquarium myths that need to go away... πŸ‘€
A lot of aquarium advice gets repeated for years without anyone questioning it. Here's a few myths we're putting to rest:
🐟 Myth #1: Fish only grow to the size of their tank.
Not exactly. Growth is influenced by nutrition, water quality, and overall conditions. While larger tanks make it easier to maintain those conditions, fish can still outgrow small aquariums.
🟒 Myth #2: Popping bubble algae releases spores everywhere.
Bubble algae is unicellular and doesn't spread through spores. If you're removing it, use a siphon while cleaning to help remove any loose algae from the system.
πŸ’§ Myth #3: If the tank looks clean, you don't need water changes.
Water changes do more than lower nitrates. They help replenish trace elements and keep your aquarium balanced over time, especially in reef and planted tanks.
🌿 Myth #4: All algae is bad.
Algae is a natural part of every aquarium ecosystem. The goal isn't eliminating it completely, it's keeping it under control through proper nutrient management and filtration.

Not every fish in your aquarium is there to win a beauty contest πŸ˜…πŸ
Some of the most valuable fish in the hobby get overlooked because they're not the brightest or flashiest.
🟒 Lawnmower Blenny – Excellent algae eater and perfect for reef tanks.
🟒 Aiptasia Eating Filefish – A unique fish that may help control one of the most frustrating pests in the hobby.
🟒 Blue Eye Kole Tang – One of the best algae-grazing tangs you can add to a saltwater aquarium.
A healthy aquarium isn't built with only show fish. Sometimes the real MVPs are the fish quietly doing the work behind the scenes.
Which one are you adding to your tank? πŸ‘‡

Some fish are too beautiful for their own good 🐠⚠️
Every week we see hobbyists fall in love with a fish, but not every fish is a good impulse purchase.
The Copperband Butterfly, Powder Blue Tang, and Tessellata Eel are all incredible animals, but they come with unique challenges that require planning, experience, and the right aquarium setup.
The best fish purchases happen when you understand the fish before you bring it home. A little research today can save a lot of frustration tomorrow.
If you're unsure whether a fish is right for your aquarium, stop by Aquarium Arts in Mesa, Arizona or reach out to our team. We're always happy to help you build a successful aquarium.

Losing a fish is never fun, but reacting quickly can protect the rest of your aquarium 🐠⚠️
A dead fish left in the tank can quickly turn into an ammonia spike, especially in heavily stocked systems.
Keeping products like Seachem Prime on hand, testing your water regularly, and being prepared for emergency water changes can make a huge difference when something goes wrong.

The six bar angel is one of those fish that instantly becomes the centerpiece of the aquarium πŸ”₯🐠
Between the bold black bars and the blue, white, and dark contrast, this is a rare angelfish that stands out in any large saltwater setup.
These guys need space, a nutrient-rich omnivore diet, and tank mates that can handle a little attitude. Definitely not reef safe, but an incredible fish for a large FOWLR system.

Phosphate can make or break a reef tank 🌊πŸͺΈ
Too much phosphate can fuel algae and slow coral growth, but bottoming it out completely can be just as harmful. The key is stability and balance.
Products like GFO and Chemipure can be powerful tools for keeping phosphate under control, but they need to be monitored and maintained properly. Reef keeping is all about understanding the chemistry behind the ecosystem.

Driftwood turning your water brown is completely normal 🌿🐠
That brown tint is tannic acid releasing from the wood, and for many freshwater fish, especially South American species, it can actually be beneficial.
If you want crystal clear water, boiling the driftwood and running products like Purigen can help clear things up fast. But for many aquariums, those natural tannins can create a healthier and more natural environment for the fish.
Visit Aquarium Arts in Mesa, Arizona for driftwood, freshwater fish, aquarium supplies, and more.

Hair algae problems usually start with nutrient issues 🌊πŸͺΈ
But once your nitrate and phosphate are under control, tuxedo urchins can be an awesome cleanup crew member for your reef tank.
These little guys are incredible algae grazers, packed with personality, and one of the coolest inverts you can add to a reef setup. Just make sure your water quality is stable, drip acclimate them properly, and glue down your corals because they love picking things up and moving them around πŸ˜‚
