Littermate Syndrome - Why getting 2 puppies isn't a great idea.

Littermate syndrome is the name given when 2 puppies (usually littermates, but this can happen with puppies from different litters of similar ages) are homed together and develop an unhealthy level of attachment to each other.

Puppies with littermate syndrome often have trouble bonding with humans because they are so attached to each other. They are often anxious or nervous around different people and dogs or in new environments. They are much harder to train and often don't want to participate in training sessions.

The easiest way to prevent littermate syndrome from developing is to not get 2 puppies at the same time, especially littermates. Most reputable breeders will not sell 2 puppies to the same family, for excellent reasons.

If you have already recently gotten littermates, there are things that you can do to prevent littermate syndrome from developing but it can take some hard work and a lot of time and management in the early stages.

Things you can do:
- Have separate areas for each puppy so they can spend plenty of time apart from each other. This could be separate crates for sleeping, separate play pens to spend time in during the day and limit the amount of time that your puppies spend together while they are developing.
- Train the puppies separately and take them on individual outings to different places, so they learn how to cope with the world on their own and also learn to be at home alone without distress.
- Treat each puppy as an individual
- If you don't have the time or resources to be able to give each puppy as much alone time as they need to thrive, you could also find another loving home for one of the puppies so each puppy has the opportunity to live their best life and become confident, happy adults.

Bravecto, Bravecto Plus, Nexgard, Simparica, Simparica Trio, Credelio, Revolution Plus all contain Isoxazoline which is a neurotoxin! ☠️

It is only supposed to be toxic to the parasites however, data is showing the toxicity is NOT limited to parasites and we are seeing many adverse reactions in dogs and cats.

Some adverse reactions that my clients have seen include:
• Aggression
• Personality changes
• Seizures
• Disorientation
• Wobbling or unstable gate
• Sensitivity to touch
• Abnormal vocalizations
• Urinary or f***l incontinence
• Death
I have seen these adverse reactions happen immediately after administration, but I have also worked with cases where the pet parent noticed these reactions days, weeks, or even months later. Sometimes the reactions don’t occur until multiple doses of the medication have been given.

AVOID THIS DRUG!

We are heartbroken to hear of the recent tragedy involving a little girl and a recently rescued dog in Blackbrook, England and are sending our sincere condolences to the family at this time 🌈

Safe interaction is imperative when living with and within a society where dogs are all around us, and the HGA work hard to raise awareness of the best ways we can all work together to keep safe.

We urge both parents and professionals to think of this infographic when considering what is and isn't acceptable interaction since we see these events transpire so often on a daily basis.

Additionally, we recommend a few ways that families can begin to learn more about keeping their environment safe including:

🔸 Purchasing the children's picture book => that takes young children through the basics of canine behaviour and safe interaction.

🔸 Looking up the Kids Around Dogs program that is suitable for older children looking to overcome their fear of dogs and more.

🔸 Investing in up-to-date and qualified pet professionals to help with providing guidance, support and positive training of the family dog.

🔸 Understanding the risks of off-leash walking but also approaching unfamiliar dogs regardless of how well-behaved a dog is. All it takes is one bad day to destroy a life.

I'm sure we can all agree that living with dogs is a learning curve we are all a part of as a dog-loving society - but this adoration for dogs comes with a great deal of responsibility to respect boundaries, learn to speak a different language and respect that even dogs have the right to feel safe in their environment.

All of us at the HGA believe in an updated, ethical and compassionate approach to working with other animal species. Please remember we are here to support families in any way we can.

Children can learn more with our forthcoming course 'The Dog Detective Certification', coming soon to The Holistic Grooming Academy!

Agreed.
02/27/2022

Agreed.

I will never intend to discredit or undermine my peers, but I do believe it's important for our continual professional development to be open-minded to adaptation for the sake of the animals we are entrusted to look after every day.

With that in mind, I wanted to share with you all an example of why some handling devices *might* cause emotional harm to our beloved animals, especially when not introduced and used positively and safely.

Here is a tool that I'm sure many of you will recognise, and I'm also sure some of you may use these in your own salons to help with general grooming procedures (and believe me, I get it! There's no denying that the Groomer's Helper© can give the professional groomer extra confidence when handling dogs around sharp objects!).

But have you ever considered what could be happening to the dog through the use of one of these devices on an emotional level?

Based on modern science, we now know that dogs are sentient animals just like us and as such, rely on their ability to freely express energy since energy is our emotions that influence our behaviours -

For example, when we feel unable to express how we feel we may become frustrated, sad and probably get a little angry. These feelings if not addressed will most likely result in us either reserving into ourselves or lashing out.

With this in mind - placing a dog in an environment surrounded by environmental stressors and further adding devices that prevent him from expressing natural behaviours (say, moving away when feeling anxious, lying down when feeling tired etc)., we are causing a disruption to his energy flow and as such, we might begin to see behaviours that reflect the same or similar feelings as described in my example above.

Learned Helplessness. Frustration. Stress. Anger.

In my Holistic Grooming Protocol©, it's not about shaming an approach that might be considered aversive from the perspective of the animal, but instead, it's about offering groomers alternative approaches that will help them to consider and fulfil the emotional needs of an animal slightly better.

One of the misconceptions in the pet industry is that safety is achieved through control...

I find this sad since it makes more sense to me that safety is more a feeling we have than a task we can perform.

When we begin to explore the significance of safety as a feeling and adapt our approach in stressful environments during stressful procedures, we understand that through more cooperative, choice-based techniques and methods, we can perform the task of grooming in a way that instils confidence and trust in the dog.

Through my observation over the last four years, this approach seems to actually prevent an escalation of fear, making our job easier and less stressful for all involved.

If you have a dog🐶 or know someone who has a dog that seizures🤯 and they haven’t tried a diet change, they are truly missing out on the potential to reduce seizures in their pet!

This new study highlights when epileptic dogs had MCT Oil (derived from coconut oil🥥) added to their food, 71% of the dogs experienced a reduced seizure frequency. MCTs provide medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and ketones as auxiliary brain🧠 energy and can reduce seizures in rodent seizure models, dogs and humans with epilepsy.

Multiple studies have shown that certain seizures frequencies can be reduced by changing to a higher fat/low carb diet (i.e. a ketogenic diet) and/or adding more clean fats to their dogs’ food, like MCT Oil. In approximately 50% children and adults with certain types of epilepsy, seizure frequency can be effectively reduced as long as the diet is continued.

In our new book, The Forever Dog, we discuss ketogenic diets, which also mimic the beneficial effects of fasting (including a reduction in seizure potential) in the chapter titled “De-Aging through Diet.” The Forever Dog is available for pre-order, worldwide, right now! www.ForeverDog.com
