Counter surfing is one of those behaviors that’s super fun for dogs… because the reward is instant. They snag the sandwich, lick the butter, steal the chicken off the counter: jackpot! Meanwhile the “correction” usually comes way later when the human discovers it. Dogs learn by consequences in the moment, which is why management and consistency matter so much with behaviors like this. If it keeps paying off, they’ll keep clocking in for the job. 😂

Cheyenne’s Residency Program recap 🎓🐾
From nervous and reactive to building confidence and working through the world with her people. So proud of this sweet girl and all the progress she made! 💛

Meet Sophie 🖤
Today I went to work with their mom on doorbell and knocking scenarios at home, and I’m so excited to officially introduce Cheyenne’s sister into the mix!

We’re approaching this residency program a little differently because both of these girls already have a ton of training under their belt. Their mom has done an amazing job keeping their obedience solid and overall has a really great handle on them. Now it’s just about bridging the gap and fine tuning this last piece together.

So thankful their mom has trusted me with both of her sweet girls. 🖤

When I say your dog becomes part of our family, this is what I mean. 🖤

This is life here too. Learning how to exist in the downtime, settle into a home, and just be is part of the training process. Yes, there’s structure and accountability, but there’s also calm, comfort, and connection.

And if your dog can handle the freedom behaviorally, (and you’re okay with couch privileges) then I am absolutely here for the snuggles. 🐾

Confidence building day at Bass Pro 🖤 Lots of people, dogs, noises, elevators (not her favorite 😂), and new experiences. Nervous at times, but she kept working through it and choosing to focus instead of doing a panic response. Small wins add up!

Cheyenne tackled Home Depot and Petsmart today! She was definitely nervous at times, especially around loud equipment, but still worked through it and stayed engaged. We also got in some obedience work with long distance stays and recalls. Proud of this girl for continuing to push through new environments 🖤

Now that this cutie patootie knows place I use her breakfast and the Treat & Train to build duration. Here she is parked on place eating breakfast while I make my own breakfast. Effectively keeping her from being underfoot while I am cooking.

Eventually we will make the rewards come after longer periods of time until they are removed completely and then we just hold her accountable for maintaining place until I release her, thus building some really awesome duration skills!

After we teach commands with food we layer in things like the leash, and accountability.

Miss Wrigley was super excited about her leash and kept jumping at it, so I layered ecollar over it to do some corrections that are less physical and more subtle. She responded beautifully and this was her first time on leash working heel without food to reward and guide her every move.

I decided to use the Treat & Train to help shape Place with Wrigley. Because of her food obsession and her excited elimination I wanted to remove myself from the equation for the most part.

Every time she did something closer to the end result of Place I would click the Treat & Train which then results in a beep and dispenses food. She worked her way up to go to the bed, get up there, lay down, and stay there until I release you.

Tools really are the bridge to communication!

One of the benefits of home based training…. The dogs here learn skills like how to navigate a doggy door. Passive training that goes a long way!
