Harley has passed on.

A few days ago, we went to put our ducks in their pen for the night and were missing Harley, one of our boys. We searched the yard and found him off on his own. He let me approach and was not moving much, though still standing and holding up his head. The next day I did my best to treat him for what might be going on, though I didn’t know for sure. That evening, he passed.

We’ve since discovered that it’s likely heat stroke that took him and we’re doing our best to keep our flock cool, though our girl, Flower, is already struggling. Good thoughts and prayers are appreciated for the flock as there will be several more high temp days coming up.

Harley is the second we’ve lost from our original flock of ducklings (his very amorous brother went to freezer camp early on). He was originally named Eah, but I swayed my young son into a more fitting name for our Welsh Harlequin (Harley, get it?). He was a very cute duckling and grew into a very handsome drake. He was quite persistent with our girls and our toddler used to say “Barley, NO!!!” when he’d be chasing a girl down.

There was a point when we separated Harley from his friends (Twoyo and Quackers) in hopes of getting ducklings from him and Daisy. He would mope and fuss next to the fence almost all day. It was so sad and so sweet. Eventually, Daisy became his other main girl and we have one duck, Chocolate, from that pair.

Harley got sweeter and sweeter with age. He looked after his main girls, tended to some stray eggs, and was the easiest to catch when we wanted to give a duck a snuggle. His absence will definitely make things different with our flock. We’re very sad to see him go.

Lots of photos of our guy 😌

Well, the duckling saga has ended. Though they were with the eggs last night in their crate, the girls did not tend to them. I buried the eggs this morning and verified to find that they definitely were never developing.
Flower and Blueberry have not returned to their nest, so they no longer have interest.
No ducklings for us this year. The girls are doing great. Flower is still in pain from her bites, but is recovering well.

Sad update:
A raccoon came last night and ate all the eggs but 2. Flower was bit on the beak. We’ve now moved the ducks into their pen for the night. Normally, the free range day and night. We’re moving Blueberry and Flower into an isolated crate within the pen.
Transitioning the nest to a safe spot may result in the girls abandoning, and we’re not sure if the remaining eggs are viable. If the eggs aren’t viable, we’ll either get ducklings for the mommas or let the eggs run their course and clean up. If they are, they’ll get to hatch their ducklings.
Flower is doing well. She’s definitely shaken up and in pain from the bites. I cleaned her up and isolated her right after the attack. This morning she very much wanted to join her sister on the nest. Having her join ensures she’ll rest. Prayers and good thoughts for our girls are appreciated.
Thanks much

Big news for our flock. We’re expecting ducklings! We came home from a vacation to find sisters, Flower and Blueberry sitting on a nest of 10 developing eggs! These girls are dedicated. We likely won’t keep all that hatch, but we’re excited to meet them. Due to hatch just after Father’s Day.

A fairy egg!
Today’s egg harvest included a tiny egg. It is a duck egg, but sometimes they come out super small. This one, I think came from our girl, Curly.

Ew!!!! What is that grey thing? (Spoiler, I now know)
Before owning ducks, I only really bought eggs from the store. Because of this, I never saw spots of blood, odd shapes, extra calcium on the shell, and this particularly alarming sight. Rest assured, this little spot is not dangerous. It’s called a MEAT SPOT and occurs when a blood vessel or bit of internal lining gets on the egg while it’s being formed. This is totally NORMAL and SAFE to find among farm fresh eggs because they aren’t inspected the same as store bought eggs.
Whenever I come across a meat spot, I always pluck it out and cook the egg as normal. Never had a problem in 5 years.
Disclaimer: if the spot is black and/or the egg smells rotten, I always toss it out.

Trying something new! I have done brined eggs before and the yolks were delicious. Now I’m going for salted eggs. Duck eggs are perfect for this project.

The ducks often “bask” in the rain. Peanut’s pose takes the cake. I laughed a little too much.

PSA for all of my followers. Ducks are pets/livestock, not presents. The duckling phase lasts a few weeks. It’s illegal to dump domestic ducks at parks and is cruel as they cannot fly off like the wild ducks. Please share this if you feel so inclined.
If you want ducks for the “duckling experience” find someone who will take the duck back when it’s an adult, some sellers do. Rehoming rarely actually works and male ducks are especially hard to rehome.

Thank you to “It’s A Boon Dock Life” for sharing this

Here are all our new girls. They all came from the same flock and seem happy to be back together. From left to right is Oreo, Buttercup (maybe Peanut), Peril, and Scarlet. My daughter loves the Wings of Fire series, so our Rouens (the darker ones) are now the Dragons.
