If you welcomed a new puppy around the holidays, congratulations. This is such a fun (and busy!) season of puppyhood. One thing that often gets overlooked early on is grooming, and starting at the right time makes a huge difference long term.
✨ When should puppies start grooming?
Most puppies can be scheduled for their first professional grooming once they’ve received their rabies vaccine. That first visit is less about a full haircut and more about introducing them to the sights, sounds, and handling of the grooming process in a positive way.
🐩 Why long-haired breeds need regular grooming
Breeds like doodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkies, and other long or curly-coated pups typically need grooming every 4–6 weeks. Waiting longer can lead to matting, which is not just a cosmetic issue. Mats pull at the skin, trap moisture and bacteria, and can cause discomfort, irritation, and even sores. Regular grooming keeps coats manageable, comfortable, and healthy.

Routine grooming:
Removes dirt, dander, and dead hair

🐕 Short-haired dogs need grooming too!
Even short-coated breeds benefit from regular grooming. They still shed, get dirty, need nail trims, ear cleaning, baths, and skin checks. Grooming helps reduce shedding, keeps skin healthy, and supports overall comfort.
