✨Patient spotlight✨- Everyone meet Vivi! This little pup came to us not feeling very well last week. Her mom had just adopted her and thankfully noticed her symptoms very quickly and brought her in for care. She was unfortunately diagnosed with parvovirus and treatment was started right away.

Did you know that a parvovirus diagnosis no longer means extensive hospital stays, potentially thousands of dollars in intensive care, and variable outcomes? We are so thankful to have access to a NEW treatment option that often requires no hospitalization. This treatment requires one IV injection of the Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody. This treatment neutralizes canine parvovirus by binding and blocking the virus from entering and destroying healthy cells.

Vivi received her injection and was back to her normal self the very next day! We retested her today and she is now NEGATIVE for parvovirus. We love that we are now able to offer this new treatment option to our clients and their fur babies.

Vivi has the best mom who is giving her the absolute best life and we can’t wait to continue to watch her grow ❤️.

✨Patient spotlight✨- This little kitten was brought in today by a Good Samaritan. We were able to successfully remove the Cuterebra larva from this poor girl's face. You could tell she felt immediate relief once it was removed. We expect her to make a full and quick recovery 💕.

Here is some more info about Cuterebra Larvae from VCA-

Cuterebra is the scientific name of the North American rabbit or rodent botfly. The adult botfly deposits its eggs near or in the opening of rodent and rabbit burrows. After hatching, the botfly larvae enter the host's body through an opening such as the nose, mouth, or skin wound. The botfly’s preferred hosts are typically rodents and rabbits. After several days, the botfly larvae migrate to the tissues beneath the skin, where they encyst (burrow in) and continue their development. After about a month of living in the host’s skin, the larvae crawl out to pupate (develop into a pupa, or immobile cocoon-like stage) in loose soil, debris, or forest detritus. Adult Cuterebra flies mate within a few days of emerging, laying more eggs, and starting the cycle again. Cats are accidental hosts of Cuterebra larvae. They are usually infected when they are hunting rodents or rabbits and encounter the botfly larvae near the entrance to a rodent's burrow. Most cases of warbles in cats occur around the head and neck. The earlier a warble is removed, the less likely the chance of severe or permanent damage to your cat.

✨Patient spotlight✨- everyone meet Essie May ❤️🐾

Miss. Essie is a sweet dachshund puppy that was brought into our clinic very sick. She wasn’t eating and was very lethargic. Upon further testing Dr. Brian Johnson diagnosed her with Leptospirosis. Thankfully we were able to get the proper diagnosis and start treatment in time. After a few days of intensive care at the University of Illinois, Essie is back to her rambunctious self! Essie May has the best mom who gave her the absolute best chance at recovery and we are so thankful and happy to see her feeling better 💕.

This is an important reminder that EVERY dog, regardless of age, breed, or size should be vaccinated annually for Leptospirosis. Lepto can be deadly and is zoonotic, which means it could make you sick too. Thankfully this disease is very easily prevented by vaccinations, so please double check your pet’s records and make sure they are protected!

Here is some more info about Leptospirosis from the AVMA:

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

-Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
-Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
-Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
-Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)
