Since 1937, Lake Humane Society has operated as a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare and protection of animals in Lake County and the surrounding metropolitan areas. Focusing on the relief of suffering and the prevention of cruelty and abuse to animals, the Lake Humane Society strives to inform and educate children and adults in the humane and respectful treatment of all liv

ing creatures. While LHS is also a county humane society that performs animal cruelty and neglect investigations, this page is not affiliated with the LHS Humane Investigations Department and is not monitored by that Department. Questions, complaints, or information about abuse or neglect of an animal must be directed to the Humane Investigations Department. We welcome and encourage comments on our page. After an impactful tenure as Executive Director at Lake Humane Society, Randy Barnes will be moving on to pursue an exciting new opportunity.

Over the past two-plus years, Randy has played an instrumental role in helping Lake Humane Society grow and strengthen its impact throughout our community. Many of our recent accomplishments and milestones would not have been possible without his dedication, vision, and leadership.

While he will be greatly missed by our staff, volunteers, supporters, and the animals we serve, we are incredibly grateful for everything he has contributed to our organization and mission.

As we begin the search for our next Executive Director, Duke Murphy, our current Director of Development, will step into the role of Interim Executive Director to help lead Lake Humane Society through this transition.

Transparency with our community is important to us, and we remain committed to continuing the lifesaving work that your support makes possible each and every day.

Please join us in thanking Randy for his leadership and wishing him the very best in this next chapter. ❤️

Found kittens? Your first instinct may be to help immediately, but in many cases, the best thing you can do is give mom a chance to come back.

If kittens are warm, quiet, clean, and appear healthy, their mother is often nearby searching for food or hiding until it feels safe to return. Mother cats are their babies’ best chance at survival, especially during the first few weeks of life. 💛

However, kittens who appear sick, injured, cold, extremely thin, or covered in dirt/feces may truly need intervention. This guide can help you determine when kittens may need assistance and when they are safest staying where they are.

Kitten season is one of the busiest and most overwhelming times of year for animal shelters and rescues, and this year has already been incredibly difficult.

📈 From 1/1/25–5/10/25, Lake Humane Society took in 68 kittens under 6 months old.
📈 From 1/1/26–5/10/26, we have already taken in 125 kittens under 6 months old.

That’s nearly DOUBLE the amount.

Right now, we have over 60 kittens in foster care between the ages of 13 days and 8 weeks old. Every decision to leave healthy kittens with mom when possible helps keep critical resources available for the kittens who truly need intervention. Thank you for helping us care for these tiny lives thoughtfully and responsibly.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we want to share an important reminder with our community: this holiday is one of the busiest times of the year for stray-animal intake at shelters across the country.

According to recent shelter data, the day after Memorial Day is consistently one of the highest stray intake days of the year for both dogs and cats. Between travel, guests coming and going, outdoor gatherings, open gates, and loud noises, it becomes much easier for pets to become lost and frightened.

The good news? A few small steps can make a huge difference in keeping pets safe at home.

✔️ Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are up to date
✔️ Double-check gates, fences, and doors before gatherings begin
✔️ Create a calm, secure space for pets during parties and fireworks
✔️ Be extra mindful during busy holiday activities and travel

Memorial Day weekend should be full of happy memories, not missing pets. Thank you for helping keep our community’s animals safe, loved, and out of shelters this holiday weekend. 🐶🐱

Memorial Day and Stray Intake: What the Data Shows Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, a time for travel, gatherings, and time spent outdoors. It’s also a time when animal shelters across the country begin to see an increase in stray intake. According to Shelter Animals Count’s 20...

From overlooked to over-loved, Boogie’s story is one we’ll never forget. 💙

Formerly known as “Locket,” Boogie arrived at Lake Humane Society sick, underweight, scraggly, and in need of a fresh start. On top of everything he had already endured, Boogie was also FIV positive, a diagnosis that sadly causes many wonderful cats to be overlooked in shelters.

But Boogie’s journey is proof that FIV is not as scary as many people think. FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is most commonly spread through deep bite wounds, meaning many FIV+ cats can safely and successfully live with FIV-negative cats when introductions are done properly and the home environment is a good fit. With patience, understanding, and love, these cats can live long, happy, fulfilling lives. 🐾

Thankfully, Boogie found adopters willing to see beyond the label. This amazing couple slowly introduced him to their FIV-negative resident cat, giving everyone the time and space they needed to adjust. Today, the two are the very best of friends, often found side by side at the window, birdwatching together.

“He is the most playful little guy and can never resist a toy. He's the sweetest man in the world and made himself at home immediately.”

Stories like Boogie’s remind us that sometimes the animals who are most overlooked are simply waiting for someone willing to give them a chance.
