In honor of National Service Dog Month, and every day, we believe that education is important for people to understand service dogs. Service dogs provide vital assistance to people to support the personal, social, and occupational assistance of their handlers. In the U.S., service dogs are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). What does that mean?

✔Rights
🔸Service dogs can accompany their handler anywhere the public is allowed, including restaurants, stores, hotels, and public transportation with very few exceptions.
✔Businesses may only ask two questions:
🔸Is the dog required because of a disability?
🔸What work or task is the dog trained to perform?
❌ They may not ask about the handler’s disability, require special papers/certification, or require a demonstration of these skills.

⚖️ Responsibilities
🔸Service dogs must be under control at all times (leash, harness, or tether unless it interferes with the dog’s work).
🔸They must be housebroken and behave appropriately in public.
🔸Handlers are responsible for the dog’s care, supervision, and well-being.

🚫 Limitations
🔸Emotional support, therapy, or comfort animals are not considered service dogs under the ADA. Therefore, they do not have public access rights.
🔸A service dog may be asked to leave if it is out of control or not housebroken.

👉 Education is key! Knowing the rights and responsibilities ensures access, safety, and respect for those who depend on their service dogs. To learn more about the rights and responsibilities, visit ▶ https://www.ada.gov/topics/service-animals/
💚Many states have additional rights. Research your state to learn more.

🐾Training Tip from Helena 🐾
Dog training isn’t just about teaching commands, it’s about ensuring safety, building good behavior, and creating a happier, healthier life for both dog and handler.

Helena reminds us:
"Your training is only going to be as good as your relationship with your dog. You need a bond built on trust and clear communication. Confusing your dog or rewarding behaviors you don’t actually want will hurt your relationship and your training. Dogs thrive with a leader who is consistent and fair."

✅ Consistency matters.
✅ Clear communication matters.
Together, they help your dog grow into the very best partner they can be.

🐾 PUPDATE!!! 🐾

Our newest pups, Radar and Houdini, are settling in beautifully with their puppy raisers!

✨ Houdini is loving his cozy new bed and is quickly learning about boundaries thanks to the wise house cats who’s making sure the lesson sticks.

☀️ Radar is soaking up the sunshine in the yard and learning his manners from the other dogs in the home.

Both pups are off to a fantastic start on their service dog journey, and we can’t wait to watch them grow! 💛🐶

🦸‍♂️🐾 What makes a superhero? It’s someone with abilities beyond the ordinary who uses their powers to make the world a better place.

By that definition, service dogs are real superheroes. 💛
With their incredible skills, they support the personal, social, and occupational independence of their handlers—changing lives and making their handler’s world brighter every day.

Many superheroes have superpowers… so let’s have some fun:
❓If you could give service dogs one superpower, what would it be❓

.340 , a USAF veteran and handler of Bliss, leads out celebration of the USAF birthday.

Honoring the Air Force Birthday with Bliss by my side

“Serving in the Air Force has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of community. Throughout my journey, my service dog Bliss has been my constant companion bringing comfort, strength, and balance into even the toughest days.

Bliss has truly been a blessing in my life. She provides essential mobility assistance, helping me navigate stairs safely and preventing falls during episodes of dizziness or instability. Incredibly intelligent and intuitive, Bliss quickly learned her tasks and began alerting me almost immediately after we brought her home. Beyond her service work, she’s our little diva full of personality, love, and joy. She has brought not only companionship into our lives but also a renewed sense of freedom and independence, even as I face multiple disabilities. Her presence is both comforting and empowering.

The Air Force isn’t just about uniforms and missions; it’s about the people, the support we give each other, and the bonds we form along the way. I’m grateful to serve and even more grateful to share this journey with Bliss, who reminds me daily of the power of loyalty and unconditional love.”

Happy Birthday to the United States Air Force celebrating 77 years of service, innovation, and excellence." ✈️💙

👩🏼‍🏫Trainer Tip Tuesday👩🏼‍🏫
Training happens all day, every day. Much like we learn from every experience we have, training our dogs is very similar.

One thing all of our dogs experience is crate training. Crate training is important because it provides a safe space where the dog can relax, can reduce separation anxiety, prevent destructive behavior, and aids in house breaking.

While crate training can be challenging, our Training Director, Shara, shares her tip for training an 8 -12-week-old puppy to sleep in a crate without them getting too upset. She explains " I put my shoes right outside of their crate when I put them in. They have been following me all day and are comforted by the shoes because I’m usually in them. Works like a charm on most pups".

Training doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it is as simple as taking off your shoes.

🐾 September is National Service Dog Month, and we’re taking time to clear up some common myths about service dogs. Even though service dogs have been protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for 35 years, there are still many misconceptions. Let’s set the record straight

🚫 Myth 1: Only certain breeds can be service dogs.
✅ Truth: Any breed or size can be a service dog as long as the dog can safely and effectively perform tasks that mitigate a disability. A small dog may not provide mobility support but could excel as a medical alert dog. Don’t let size fool you!

🚫 Myth 2: Service dogs are only for people who are visually impaired.
✅ Truth: Service dogs can assist with a wide range of disabilities, including mobility challenges, hearing impairment, mental health conditions, and more. Their tasks are tailored to each individual’s needs.

🚫 Myth 3: Individuals with service dogs cannot have other pets.
✅ Truth: Service dogs are not pets but they can live alongside them. With proper care and safety, service dogs and pets can coexist, and research shows animals in the home benefit everyone.

🐶💡 Knowledge is key to building a more inclusive community for people with disabilities.

📌 Stay tuned; next week we’ll dive into the laws about service dogs that everyone should know.

Today, we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the courage of the first responders, and the resilience of our nation.
May we never forget the sacrifices made, and may we continue to stand together with unity, strength, and compassion.

🐻In 1981, colorful little bears taught the world about love, kindness, and caring. Decades later, their message still holds true and so does ours.

Today is Share Your Care Day, a reminder to spread caring, sharing, love, friendship, acceptance, fun, happiness, compassion and philanthropic generosity every day of the year.

At Canine Support Teams, our service dogs embody these values bringing independence, comfort, and unconditional love to those who need it most. 🐶💛

❤Career Change Spotlight!!!❤

We’re celebrating Beauty as she begins her next chapter! After years of dedicated service, Beauty has officially retired and just took her very first cross-country flight to her forever home in southwest Ohio.

At CST, we believe every service dog deserves the same care, support, and love in retirement that they gave during their working years. Finding safe, happy forever homes for these incredible dogs is an important part of our mission—and it takes a community of support to make it possible.

Want to help us continue this work? There are many ways to get involved! Contact us or go here ---> https://caninesupportteams.org/donate/to learn more about how you can support dogs like Beauty as they transition into their well-earned retirement.
