Sweet 🧁

He fell asleep holding on, his tiny hoof resting gently in the hand he trusts most. In that quiet moment, the world felt perfectly safe. No fear, no worry—just warmth, love, and the steady comfort of being close. This little giraffe doesn’t need much to feel at peace… just the presence of the one who never lets him down. To him, that hand isn’t just comfort—it’s everything. As sleep takes over, he relaxes completely, knowing he’s protected, cherished, and home. And in his dreams, he holds on just the same… because love like that never lets go.

Yes. Dogs can tear them apart and swallow the threads, which can result in an obstruction and costly surgery.

Yesterday morning our team member Guy caught this magical photo of 13-day-old Johnny meeting 3-day-old Winston for the first time.  If this doesn’t stop your scroll and give you joy in your heart.....I don’t know what will.

This photo represents even more of a miracle when you understand the context.  Both of their mothers were rescued in October 2025 from the Texas auction where the kill pen buyers go to purchase donkeys at scale to ship to Mexico for slaughter.  Kenneth, Madyson & Ron were there.  But something magical happened.  That resulted in these two perfect babies.  And is also the subject of this Saturday’s episode.  “No Donkeys Left Behind”.

Normally, when we go to auction, we focus on donkeys that we think can be adoptable after some physical & emotional rehab.  We are an adoption center.  That is how we scale the number of donkeys we can help.  The cruel reality of that is that we would not naturally add an extremely untamed donkey, like Chachita, Winston’s mom to our list.  We also don’t focus on mini donkeys, like Johnny’s mom Earl Gray. We find that other rescues and private buyers generally go for minis, mammoths & mules - so we tend to focus on the standard donkey.

But while we were there, walking the pens, building our list, something magical happened.  YOU.  The financial & moral support that day was incredible. You just kept donating.  And a few of you came through in a big way.  After hours of walking the pens, building our list, posting on social media and checking our fundraising...something occurred to us.  OMG - I think we can get them all.  I think our supporters have come through in such a way that we can literally say “No Donkeys Left Behind”.  That changed everything.  (and also created a very bad situation for us at the auction - but that’s for another day)  We rescued every single donkey at the Oct25 auction!  Even the wild ones (Chachita) and the minis (Earl Gray). And that act of generosity from  you - gave us Johnny & Winston.  You did this!  THANK YOU!

Tune in Saturday to see other stories from this rescue.  No Donkeys Left Behind.  ABC Stations & donkeyking.com on Saturday.

Last week’s dramatic news about the beagles at Ridglan Farms has led to national attention about whether it is ethical (and/or even good science?) to keep beagles in tiny wire cages in any research facility, for any reason, anywhere. About time!

There are several organizations working on this very issue—last week I met a cinematographer, Andria Chamberlin who is making a documentary about what happens when a lab beagle is released to a good home. (She has one, Walter. That’s him in the photo, first time on a bed in his life, with role model Luna.) Andria introduced me to the Beagle Freedom Project, which has been working for fifteen years to stop testing on perhaps the sweetest breed of dog ever known, in tiny wire cages their entire lives. Check out their website, bfp.org.

Many of you have been asking, “What can we do?” There are lots of answers, but donating to bfp.org is one of them. I know I just did. You can also contact your senators and representatives—is the NIH funding research done on beagles raised in brutal and abusive conditions? I’ve done that too, and they are listening!

Don’t give up, change is going to come!

My heart is breaking for sweet Melton. First he tragically lost his farm and family when they were killed by a drunk driver. He was then moved to a rural shelter, where he was so scared. We rescued him from there, and today he unexpectedly lost his foster home.
This guy could REALLY use a little love, patience and consistency, until he can get neutered and adopted. He currently has no where to go.
Is anyone available to help?

He is good with cats and dogs, but might be scared of small kids, we can always try that out at the shelter…

If you would like more information, please contact Midwest Animal Resq. Thank you.
