Summertime Shedding
To help double coated dogs regulate their body temperature during the summer heat, one of the best things that can be done is to give them a proper deshed treatment, and not a haircut. Cutting the hair can permanently damage how their coat grows!
I never recommend giving a short haircut to a double coated dog, such as a husky. The long, thicker guard hairs actually do more to protect the dog from the sun's ultraviolet light and weather conditions. It's the thick, fluffy undercoat hair that insulates the dog. By properly deshedding and removing the dead or loose undercoat hair that may be trapped, a dog is then better able to regulate their core temperature.
Besides periodic grooming, a double coated dog requires regular brushing to help maintain a clean shiny coat that protects them from both the cold AND the heat.
