Fresh Start Sheltie Rescue

Fresh Start Sheltie Rescue Fresh Start Sheltie Rescue, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating Shelties that need a "Fresh Start" in life.
(1)

We are located in the Memphis, TN area, and take in Shelties that are abandoned, lost, mistreated, or no longer wanted. We do not have a shelter facility; therefore the dogs in our program are housed and cared for in our network of dedicated foster homes. Our special rescue Shelties will be available for adoption after they have been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, checked (and treated if necessar

y) for heartworms, checked (and treated if necessary) for parasites, and groomed. Prospective homes will be thoroughly screened before being considered to adopt.

Meet Ranger. This handsome boy is about 4 to 5 years old. He is a little oversized and weighs about 28 pounds. He is UTD on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and has had his teeth cleaned. He was a stray found in another state and no owner was found. He is very friendly and just wants someone to love on him. He walks fine on a leash. He knows how to sit, and he knows what 'no' means. He is good with other dogs and is respectful of their space. He is learning about toys and how fun it is to play with them! His coat is dull and brown instead of shiny black. With good food and care, he will have a gorgeous coat in the future.

He would do well with older children in the home or just adults. He would be good with or without another dog. He will be a great addition to a lucky family. Fenced yard is required. He is being fostered in northwest Arkansas. Adopter must be willing to drive and pick him up. We do not place long distances, though.

As stated above, ALL inquiries must be emailed to [email protected].

Update 7-20-25: ADOPTED!!!

ALL inquiries need to be sent to [email protected]

Meet miss Gracie! She came into rescue a few days ago. She is 10 years old, and her owner was moving and could not take her with her. Gracie is good with other dogs and with cats. She is a sweet and well behaved girl. She does need to lose weight and will be started on a diet and exercise program. She is already UTD on vaccinations and spayed. She will be seeing a vet soon to determine if she needs a dental cleaning. She is being fostered in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Who has room in their home and in their heart for a sweet senior Sheltie girl?

Meet miss Buttons! She came into rescue on Sunday. She is 12 years old and was rescued from a bad situation. She has had many litters of puppies with little to no vet care. During her vet visit on Monday, the vet told us she has a couple of oronasal fistulas. What is that you ask? When a tooth would rot and fall out (because she wasn't taken to the vet for any type of dental care), sometimes the hole would not close up. Those holes extend from her mouth to her sinuses! On top of that, she has more loose teeth that will definitely need to be extracted during her dental cleaning. There is a chance she might lose all her remaining teeth. The vet will try to repair the holes with flaps if she can. What we do know now is that her mouth is VERY painful, and she has suffered for too long. She also has some concerning issues with her kidneys that we are addressing as well as a current urinary tract infection. She also has a small mammary nodule that will be removed when we spay her. We hope to get her healthy enough in a couple of weeks to get her dental and spay. It will be expensive, that we know.

Even with all her medical issues going on, she is a very happy girl! To see her tail wagging a million miles an hour and have her paw you when she says please don't stop petting me is priceless!!! She is now clean as opposed to stinking to high heaven when we got her. Removing the large amount of f***s matted to her back end, getting the mats out, cutting her nails (back dew claws were grown into a complete circle) and bathing her made her feel (and smell) so much better. Her legs, collar, and tail tip weren't anywhere near white. They were stained brown and yellow, so we know her living conditions had to be gross. Even after scrubbing with regular shampoo and then scrubbing with whitening shampoo, those areas didn't improve much; it will take quite a while to get back to white. Miss Buttons won't be available for adoption any time soon. In fact, we have someone already interested in fostering to adopt her after her vetting is done. We are working hard to give her much needed care! She deserves it!

Guess what today is??? It is our 'Beniversay!' It was on this day one year ago that Ben came into rescue. He was 63 pounds, could barely walk and needed assistance getting up into a standing position and walking up or down stairs, and was almost hairless.

One year later - today - and he is 30 pounds, can walk fine and even trot, and is growing hair!!!

Thanks to our wonderful donors that helped us with testing, medication, hock surgery at the specialty center, etc. He is flourishing and loves life!!! Go Ben!!!

Miss Chloe came into rescue a couple of weeks ago. She came from a commercial breeder and has never been a pet before now. We almost named her Elsa because you would just set her anywhere (outside in an x-pen, outside loose in the yard, in the kitchen, in a dog bed, etc.) and she would just be 'frozen' for a very long time. Poor girl is shy and scared because she was never properly socialized when she was a puppy. She is 5 years old and will be 6 next month. Giving her the love, time, and patience she needs to find out how wonderful life can be as an inside beloved companion is what we do best. She was spayed today so all her vetting is done, but she won't be put up for adoption until she gets more adjusted to the 'real world.' She is learning crate training, house training, leash training, etc. Her foster brothers - a Collie and a Sheltie are her helpers and showing her 'the ropes.' She has made some progress in coming out of her shell but will be a work in progress for a while. We aren't taking any inquiries on her yet, and we will let everyone know when we are closer to the time to find her forever home. She is being fostered in Collierville, TN.

Time sure flies when you are having fun! Let me tell you, I am very much having fun!!! Life just gets better and better for me. Sorry it has been so long since the last update. I moved to middle Tennessee to a new foster home in December, and I got to stay in east Tennessee for a couple of weeks in March.

Major news announcement - I have now lost 30 pounds! I can't begin to tell you how much better I feel and how much more I can move around. I haven't grown much hair, though. I think it might be because I have Cushing's and low thyroid. My foster peeps keep me decked out in cool clothes, so I do know I am one handsome dude. I thank everyone out there that donated, prayed, supported, etc. me in any way. I will need ongoing testing for the Cushings and thyroid issues, and I overheard someone say my medications I am taking are pricey. They also say I am worth every penny!

BYE and have a fabulous day!!!

Adopted!!!

ALL inquiries need to be sent to [email protected]!

Star is a very cute, small 7 year old female (she turned 7 in November). She is such a love bug. While a bit shy with strangers, she warms up quickly and is always willing to have lots of petting and scritches. She has a full and beautiful coat! She is house trained and leash trained and does well on walks. Start has not been sleeping in a crate; she is happy to sleep on her dog bed in the same room as the other dogs. She is quiet all night.

Star shows willingness to play with the other dogs and would do well in a home with another dog. She has been exposed to older children and would do well if the environment is on the calm side. A fenced yard is a must, also. Star is UTD on all vaccines and is current on heartworm prevention. She was recently spayed and received a dental cleaning. Star came to rescue a bit overweight and has already lost 5 pounds. It would be highly beneficial for Star if her new family would continue her current diet of high quality, low carbohydrate food. She is being fostered in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Adopter must be willing to travel to meet and adopt her. She is going to be a wonderful additional to someone's family!

These girls found their home through Sheltie Shack Rescue!!!

These 2 beautiful tri girls are with a 'sister' Sheltie rescue group located in the southwest Missouri area (west of Branson). They are bonded and have been waiting quite a while to find their forever home. If you have room in your heart and home for these 2 girls, contact Sheltie Shack rescue at [email protected]. Their website is www.sheltieshack.com. Here is a little more info. on them:

Molly & Lilly are almost 5 year old (15 to 18 pound) female littermates. These sweet tricolor ladies are very bonded and love playing with each other. They will only be placed together. All their vetting is complete (spay, dental, lab work, HW test, f***l test, vaccinations, microchipping, & grooming). They get along well with other dogs and even had a cat friend in their previous home. These are GREAT lil dogs! Everyone that meets them falls in love. FENCED YARD MANDATORY.

Let's help find them a great forever home!

Hey y'all (I'm from the south, so I say Y'ALL, lol)

I can't believe it has been SO LONG since I was able to post an update. Since I have to rely on a human to get this done, it's not me - it's them to blame, lol!

I love the cooler weather! In late September, I got to go to the Farmer's Market. I liked all the attention and petting I got. I rode in the stroller since I was still on restricted activity. In early October, I got my bandage OFF! They told me things looked good but to stay on restricted activity until the 9 weeks post surgery x-rays were done. Later in the month, I got to go stay with some awesome peeps Billy and Amy while my whole foster family went on vacation. My, oh my, I had lots of new experiences and gifts, too. It was like Christmas!!! Check out all my pics - there are too many things to write about! Especially make sure you check out my pics from a professional photo shoot Billy and Amy took me to!!!

The most exciting news is that on October 31st, I went and had the x-rays taken to see how I was healing. YAY, OH YAY, they said I was healing very well! Now mind you I am off restricted activity now, but I still can't go very fast. I have lost 20 pounds, yes 20, but I still have about 10 more to go, and it will take time to build muscle and get more mobile. All in all, I can say I feel so much better than I did a few months ago. I thank everyone out there that donated, prayed, supported, etc. me in any way. It takes a village! I love y'all!!!

Adopted!!!

BELLA is an adorable sable & white female Sheltie puppy who is 10 weeks old. She is a typical puppy - full of vim and vigor! She needs an age appropriate adopter who is not gone all day and has the patience and time to raise a puppy! If there are children in the home, they need to be at least over 6 or 7 years old. We think this cutie will stay on the small side. We will require a home for her that has a physical and secure fence (no invisible fences). She is being fostered in Hot Springs, AR, and adopter must be willing to drive there to meet and adopt this little girl. We prefer to place her as locally as we can if possible. Email [email protected] for more information.

Howdy!

Ben here updating you on what has been going on in my life. Actually, I have been pretty busy, and I love it! Last Wednesday, I went in to have my bandage changed. The original plan was to have a bandage with a brace/splint in it for 4 weeks and then a softer bandage for 2 weeks. Well, last week was week 3. After they took the old bandage off, they let me walk a little to assess my healing. They said I was doing so well, they went to the soft bandage a week early. Yahoo! Then my foster mom took me on a road trip! She was going to Nashville for 3 days, and I got to go with her. She bought me a cowboy hat (off of Amazon of course) and made me a bandana for the occasion. She said Nashville was the home of country music, so I should look the part, lol. I got to stay in a hotel with her sister (my foster aunt?), and we had fun. My foster mom found a doggy stroller for a great price on Facebook Marketplace, and it was a great help in getting me from our hotel room to the outside to take care of 'business' since I am still on restricted activity for a while. Today I go back to the Fatigue Clinic for another PEMF mat session. I LOVE my friends there. Thanks everyone for your continued healing thoughts and prayers!!!
