We hope everyone stays safe in this upcoming weather. I get asked a lot about whether to keep horses up or not. Unfortunately it depends. I’ve responded to horses injured in barns when a barn has collapsed in a storm and to horses who were out in it from severe shrapnel injuries from flying debris. If you have wind breaks, terrain that lends itself to valleys where the horses can get down out of the wind, leaving them out might be an option. If you have a sturdy barn, keeping them in and battening down the hatches can be an option. Regardless: 1)  make sure your horses have halters and lead ropes close by so that in the event of an emergency you can reach them. Having a lead rope wrapped up nice and fancy on a stall does you no good when you have five seconds to grab it and get a horse out.2) it can be a good idea to use a grease marker to write your phone number on the side of your horse or to have your name and phone number on a brass nameplate on a leather halter which your horse wears during the storm or to have your horse microchipped. Obviously some of these things are things that you cannot get ready within the next five hours, but these are things that are food for thought. 3) keep your Coggins and medical records for your horse in a very readily accessible location. With the digital Coggins, it’s always a good idea to snap a photo of it on your phone so that you have the photo even if the internet is down. 4) I would encourage everyone to download the Zello app onto your phone. It turns your phone into a walkie-talkie. You are easily able to communicate with a large number of people by simply pushing the button on the app. You can make a family group or we also use this app on location during animal cruelty cases that are on a large amount of land so we can communicate quickly and readily, and it can really be a wonderful thing to have in the event of a disaster. 5) have at least 4 to 5 days worth of food and hay for your horses in an area that will stay dry in case anything floods.6) remember that flood waters are generally contaminated with all manner of chemicals and potentially human waste so have some Dawn to wash your horses’ legs and it's a good idea to wear rubber boots in these situations so they can be decontaminated easily.

While this is for an arena in Texas responding to the number of positive Coggins AKA EIA horses at the Bowie livestock arena and all of the potential exposure to horses who were at that facility, this is a good reminder for all of us. Be aware of where the horses coming into your barn are coming from and where they've been. Yes the argument is that a horse can have a negative Coggins one day and the next get bitten by a fly and become positive but knowing where horses have been and knowing what they've been exposed to is important. Just keeping your head on a swivel and being aware of what's happening in the horseworld can help you protect the horses at your farm.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY:

Any horse that has been to the Bowie Livestock barn or has been in contact with horses from Bowie Livestock Barn is NOT ALLOWED on the property for the next 30 days.

As with anything there will be a million different people saying a million different things. We can all hope that the original information that was shared wasn’t completely accurate, however we are still going to be proactive in protecting our facility and our animals from any possible threats. When more information is released we may change plans going forward, but for now we are going to stand by not allowing any horses from Bowie or in contact with horses from Bowie from coming to our facility.

Pease see the post we shared from Bowie. They confirmed a horse tested positive on Friday and are awaiting further test results from the state which will be back Friday to confirm whether the horse actually is positive or if it was a false positive. As such we are also awaiting those results before we open back up as normal. Here is a link to their post as well.

🛑Alert! Check your livestock feed for a recent recall - especially TN horse owners.

ADM Animal Nutrition has voluntarily recalled multiple brand names of their chicken feed, swine feed, cattle feed, and horse feed.

Horse feed Seniorglo 50-lb. bags - Lot 505426QN - were specifically sold in Tennessee. This product may contain increased levels of calcium, which could cause weight loss and the animal to become weak and listless. This product was distributed between Jan. 24, 2024, and Feb. 1, 2024.

It began with a customer complaint related to swine refusing to eat feed. ADM investigated and discovered that the company’s facility in Illinois had experienced an equipment failure that impacted ingredient distribution. Specific lots could contain harmful levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium sodium, and/or chloride.
